Re: 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Multiple Part Failures - Need Help!

I haven't had a chance to look into a diag on the cps -- but it's a hall effect device so if the resistance curve can be found it ought to be easy to troubleshoot. The only way I can think of without that is to compare the resistance range to a known good sensor. I'd worry about the ECU last. I can ...

Re: 850 (non-turbo) 1997 - Making It Faster

Sigh. Yes, I know all about the damper on one side of the NA throttle plate. Sure, you remove it and you get a bit better throttle response for the first few degrees of rotation. At WOT (which is where you'll be most of the time in your 15.5 run) it doesn't make a smack of difference. Why did Volvo ...

Re: 850 (non-turbo) 1997 - Making It Faster

There is also the matter of the 170 lb turbo weight penalty but I won't bore you with details. Huh? Cite your reference, please. Same car, turbo vs. not is more like 45 pounds worth of hardware. Well worth the extra 50+ HP and torque you'll get. Let me remind you of your first shot across the bow h...

Re: Idle Air Control Valve question

Please make 1000% sure you are certain it is mistimed at the belt before you change the relationship of the cams to each other & the crank. If the reference book is Haynes, I would be very suspicious. You know that is very odd that the belt would skip a notch (or two). If somehow that is what ha...

Re: 850 (non-turbo) 1997 - Making It Faster

I apologize, but this one got me sitting closer to the edge of my chair. Unless you are also going to replace the TB, flow the head, go to a larger exhaust, larger injectors and dial in a custom tune -- there is NO WAY tweaking the intake on these cars is going to get you any more than a couple of H...

Re: 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Multiple Part Failures - Need Help!

ABS and traction are the same unit: the ABS controller underneath the brake cylinder/distribution bank. This is a common failure on these cars. As long as you are getting 12VDC when off and approx 14VDC when running (measured anywhere) your charging system is ok. You could have ground issues, but I'...

Matt's right on that...I'm assuming your car is in a good state of tune...if not then do the basic tune-up first.

Re: V70GLT 2000 Starting issue - Cold or Hot

With no misfire codes I'd suspect fuel delivery first. Either the fuel pump relay or the check valve on the fuel line...which I don't recall if on your car is on the fuel line itself or part of the fuel pump assembly. I think it may be in the pump. Edit: I should have elaborated a bit on the check v...

Re: Idle Air Control Valve question

Crank sensor failure is very rare, but I would imagine should throw a code...zero output to the tach sort of thing. Cam sensor is more common, and you'll usually get a misfire code. I'm sure there is a test procedure for both, but I don't have VADIS so I can't tell you what it is. The cam sensor is ...

Re: Tire recommendation

Good question on the inspection of those top pieces of hardware. Maybe with the car on a lift and grabbing the spring with a big ol' pair of slip joint pliers you might be able to get a sense of anything loose up there.
