Glad you got it running. I'm not familiar with VMWare Player but on my VM I used VirtualBox. For proper USB control you need to download, install and configure a separate extension pack. Then you must make sure that you actually select the USB device from the toolbar that's connected to your laptop.

It would appear that software downloads are no longer available for independent operators. Even if you were current with VIDA 2015, Volvo says you must go to a dealer to get software downloads.
