Re: [2001 V70 2.4T] Parking brake shoe size?

I just searched advanceautoparts for you and came up with 2 different sizes but the same fitment details: 2001 Volvo V70 (2.4L 2435CC L5 FI Turbo VIN: B5244T3) Yup, that's what I already did (except at AutoZone.com), which is why I was bringing the issue to the forum for advice. [2001 V70 2.4T] Parking brake shoe size?

I'm looking to replace the parking brake shoes in my '01 V70, and local sources list two different sizes, both which it says are compatible with my car: - 0.98 x 6.3" - 0.99 x 7.09" From what I understand, the second number is the diameter of the parking brake drum. I measured mine as 7". Would eith...

This procedure is recommended in VIDA when replacing the fuel filter. Here's Volvo's specific wording which is very slightly different from the above, in that they say to start the engine before removing the fuse: Start the engine. Remove the fuel pump fuse. Re: [2001 V70 2.4T] Oscillating humming noise when driving

It makes sense that the front left bearing would be the first to go, what with all the right turns, and the fact that the driver is usually the only passenger in this car except on family trips with long highway drives.

Re: [2001 V70 2.4T] Oscillating humming noise when driving

That’s the right one. You replace it as a unit, correct, the bearing does not come out separately. If it’s noisy on RIGHT turn, it s the LEFT bearing that’s bad. Should I replace both the left and right hubs, or just the side that seems to be worse? Just wondering if it's one of those things that s...

The noise seems to increase when I turn to the right, so I guess that would point to the right front bearing? The car has 254,000 miles on it at present. I have owned it since 189,000 miles, and I know that nothing in the wheel hub assemblies has been serviced during that time. My thought is to repl...

[2001 V70 2.4T] Oscillating humming noise when driving

Whenever I'm driving, I hear an oscillating humming noise that varies in frequency based on wheel speed, and varies in amplitude based on force on the wheels. After some further testing, I can confirm that IAT is around 95-100F with the A/C off, when driving, regardless of speed. IAT goes up to 115F with the A/C on (presumably because the heat emanating from the condenser reduces the effectiveness of the intercooler). Idling results in IAT of 140-150F, wh...

Its pointing that way. I don't like that you had bare wires in your harness, either. Yeah... they seemed to show up mostly in places where the cable takes a sharp bend to get into the ignition coil. Re: Thud when pressing accelerator

Its worth a shot, but the transmission level in the sump climbs when the engine is shut off, just like the engine. It really needs to be checked per the procedure. I don't get why the dipstick would even have a "cold" measurement range if it wasn't a valid form of measurement? When was the last dra...

Re: Thud when pressing accelerator

In order to rule out engine block movement as the issue here's a cheesy idea. Eliminate all the play in the upper mount. My method would be to jam a piece of rubber or two in the space(s) between the rubber bushing and the mount. A utility knife and a hack job on the sole of an old flip flop or sho...

Re: Thud when pressing accelerator

The torque converter is the item that lets engine speed and tranmission/vehicle speed vary, so I think your intuition is on track about that being the part to explore. Its pretty subtle. I hate saying this, but you might have to wait for it to get worse. I agree that the sound is pretty subtle. Wha...

The front of the engine flop during the break revving is concerning. Loose trans torque mount could be suspect. Excessive play in the upper mount could just be compensation. Re: [2001 V70 2.4T] Hiccup in power steering / alternator when splashing through water

Once I eliminate any sources of belt contamination, would I need to replace the belt, or would cleaning it be sufficient? I'm assuming that using brake cleaner or other harsh chemicals on the belt would be a bad idea. For cleaning it, I had two ideas: 1. Start the engine, then hit both sides of the ...

Ugh, I'm feeling for you. I've had to replace the window regulator and sliding blocks twice on my '01 V70, both times in the dead of winter, outside. Re: Engine Temperature Increase after Water Pump, Thermostat and Coolant replacement

The thermostat has a specified opening temperature, and there is often a range of possibilities that fit the same model of car. It may be that you swapped to one with a higher opening temperature. I know on my '01 V70 2.4T the thermostat opens at 195F, and the normal ECT range is 195F-215F.

In the auxiliary belt/tensioner replacement instructions, VIDA just says "Check the rotation of the belt and the operation o...

I paid for the XeMODeX repair-and-return service on my '01 V70 2.4T ETM, when at the time FCP was reselling it for $344.99. It appears FCP is no longer doing this, so the price direct from XeMODeX $489. :-( However, the quality of their rebuild is top-notch if you can spring for it: https://xemodex....

[2001 V70 2.4T] Power steering leak from pump and/or reservoir

Over the past week or so, a leak has developed seeping from the power steering pressure line. Specifically, it’s coming from the joint between the pressure line itself and the nut that attaches it to the pump. At idle it produces a steady trickle of fluid, and when you actually try to drive the car ...

Re: 2004-xc70 turbo does not shut off

If it's coming on right when the car starts up, it might be the engine cooling fan, not the turbocharger. This can happen sometimes when the engine coolant temperature sensor is malfunctioning or disconnected, the computer will kick the fan in all the time to compensate.

Repairing split seams in leather

When we bought our 2001 V70 in 2015, the front driver's seat already had some wear and split seams. Three years later the back seat now has a split seam and the front driver's seat has developed a few more. The lug nuts are oversized and if kept near the correct torque they aren't stressed enough to worry about them. Notes from PCV hose patch job; comments, criticism, and commiserations are welcome: To gain access, I removed the power steering pump, alternator, fan shroud, throttle and throttle pipe. Not the intake manifold. In retrospect, this wasn't a great idea. I've removed the alternator several times but h...

Re: Cam cover removal

The black plug is a metal-plastic “blank” that covers the rear of a camshaft that doesn’t have a camshaft position sensor (no VVT hub on the other end). To remove it you pierce it with a screwdriver and pry it off. It’s not meant to be reused so you’ll have to buy another one. They’re only $3 or so.

It can take a surprisingly small amount of gas to make a difference between starting and not starting. Even something like parking on a hill with a low tank of gas can make it so fuel can't reach the engine.

I think it's legal as long as you're using an "approved" container. I'm assuming most auto parts stores would sell "approved" ones. In fact I've seen many gas stations sell small gas cans. It wouldn't cost much to try adding a couple of gallons and see if it starts. A "strong" crank to me usually so...

Re: [2001 V70 2.4T] Oil leak, intake side, lower engine / oil pan

Yeah, it's not the turbo drain pipe, that's in the rear of the car. Clean back there. I think abscate is probably right about the PCV system, the positioning seems about right. I'm going to try and find a photo from when I did the PCV job to see if I can compare positions.

[2001 V70 2.4T] Oil leak, intake side, lower engine / oil pan

It's another oil leak! Hooray! I noticed oil was starting to pool up on the driveway again, and the entire bottom of the oil pan was coated with oil. I cleaned up the oil pan and then started the engine and let it idle in the driveway for about half an hour. No signs of oil. Then I took it out for a...

Cleaning the Throttle Body in the 2.5T engine is, in fact, VERY SIMPLE. No need to remove Intake Manifold etc. etc. All you need is to read this DIY I wrote a while back. And it is FREE (other than the cost of the Brake Cleaner etc.). DIY: 2005 XC90 2.5T Throttle Body Cleaning https://www.matthewsv...

Here are my thoughts as someone who has a 2001 V70 2.4T and has replaced both the throttle body and pcv system: 1. I'm not sure Sea-Foam will help with either the ETM or PCV issues. The ETM is likely a more permanent hardware issue, and if you have symptoms of a clogged PCV system, I doubt that Sea-...

If you don't remove the timing gears before removing the cam cover, some of the screws holding the timing gears on to the cams can get caught up on the cam cover or the cylinder head prevent them from fully lifting away. Yup, permatex anaerobic sealant. Applied with micro-sized foam roller to give the most even results. I recommend to get the thinnest foam roller possible because I once used a thicker one and I feel that a lot of sealant was wasted being sucked up into the foam.

From your First post you had motor mounts on your radar- that’s good mechanical intuition ! I’m still a bit curious as to what the four ‘ flanks’ of camshaft adaptation are.
