2001 V70 2.4T automatic, $1500, Salem, MA
I'm looking to sell my 2001 V70 2.4T. If you're in the P2 sub-forum, you've probably seen me post about it plenty over the past 9 years. Lately, it has failed the Massachusetts state inspection due to excessive steering play, and it would need a new steering rack in order to pass. I'm not interested...

Re: 2001 V70 2.4T Failed MA Inspection :-(
Oh, crap. Can you maybe shop for another inspection house I could try, but this was already the place I found by "shopping around" when it failed several years ago... it seems that MA is cracking down on lenient inspectors. They actually failed me for two things this year that they had pa...

Re: 2001 V70 2.4T Failed Massachusetts inspection for steering play
Hi all. Sadly, we've decided we need to get rid of this car. It's not a job my father-in-law or I want to tackle and we don't want to pay someone else to do it. I wanted to give folks here in the forum the right of first refusal since you have all been so helpful with it over the years. Anyone want ...

Re: 2001 V70 2.4T Failed Massachusetts inspection for steering play
Update: I took the car down to our local trusted garage (not Volvo-specific, but generally trusted by everyone in the neighborhood for being honest, competent, and no-nonsense) to get a diagnosis and estimate for repairs. Their diagnosis was that the play is coming from within the steering rack and ...

Re: 2001 V70 2.4T Failed Massachusetts inspection for steering play
No way that can be fixed without taking it out and having it sent to a shop or replaced outright. I would say you are very close to the pinion or rack getting destroyed and losing control of steering. It has actually been in this state for at least three years now (a different station failed me for...

Re: 2001 V70 2.4T Failed Massachusetts inspection for steering play
I’m not quite so concerned. There is a lot of structural redundance built into a rack. Are you sure the wheel is being held tight while that play is being exercised? If I push pull on my tie rods on a P80 the steering wheel moves, that’s isn’t play I'm not sure about the steering wheel being held. ...

2001 V70 2.4T Failed Massachusetts inspection for steering play
Some of you may recall three years ago that my 2001 V70 2.4T failed Massachusetts state inspection due to excessive play in the sterring rack: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=96401&start=10 At the time, I ended up taking it to a different shop, who ended up passing it. T...

Re: [2001 V70 2.4T] Coolant Wars: The Coolant Strikes Back
distribution box, located behind airbox, contains fuses and relays, the signal wire passes through on its journey to the fan. I'll check for voltage on my signal wire, its 3 am right now. your experiences with no fan at high temps are not verified. The high temp reading might be wrong, I'd verify w...
