Re: 2001 V70 Crank no Start

If it starts when you jump, and stays running for an extended time you can basically eliminate the starter, alternator, plugs, wires and coil packs as problems. Sure sounds like battery.

Re: 2001 V70 Crank no Start

Air is regulated by the electronic throttle module based on what the ECM tells it to do. The ECM looks at the mass air flow sensor to figure out how much air is going in. If you unplug the MAF (located just downstream of the air filter box) the car should go into a limp home mode where it uses its b...

I'm coming up with a list considerably higher than that. Am I way off?

Rebuilt passenger side CV ~$150
Oil pan ~$165
Lower Control Arm ~$150
Front tires (2) ~$270
New brake hose on passenger side ~$25

Total ~$760

Parting out 2001 V70 T5

I fear the end of the road has come for my 2001 V70 T5. Time to part this one out. I’m in the Midwest, USA (Southern Illinois to be more specific). The ball joint failed at speed, taking out a tire, control arm and CV joint. The tow truck then punctured the oil pan hauling it home. Engine was runnin...

Re: 2001 V70 Crank no Start

For me, this was the clue. I knew I was getting spark, knew it was getting fuel, so it had to be air. That things changed when MAF was disconnected was the pointer on where to look.

Re: 2001 V70 Crank no Start

The hot plate is the actual sensor in the MAF. It works by heating a metal plate. The air across it cools it. By knowing heat input, ambient temp and plate temp, air flow can be calculated reliably. Cleaned this by spraying down with some MAF cleaner. Don’t touch it. Finger oils will foil it and cau...

If you're not hearing the whine, it could possibly be something besides the clogged filter. A total failure in the torque converter could cause no movement, but that's remarkably rare. It's possible to check if the pump is running by looking at line pressures. This can be done on jack stands or a li...

In troubleshooting this, I'd look for what's common to both modules. If there's no communication to either module, the power is off to that box or the CANbus leads are messed up. As a data point, I purchased a 2002 AW55-50SN for my 2001 V70 T5. It was $500 delivered to my driveway. I had another ~$250-$300 in new fluids and miscellaneous little parts done at the same time like the front torque mount and a rebuilt torque converter. After completely draining the fluid and open...

Re: Trans drives in neutral (no reverse)

If it is trying to drive in park and neutral you have one of two issues. Automatic transmissions are hydraulic machines. Hydraulic pressure is routed through a complex series of valves (the valvebody) to push clutch packs together and apart as needed to obtain the desired gear or drive ratio. Your t...

Just curious, is the transmission issue better/worse at cold/hot temperatures?

Solenoid sticking is generally reported to be worse at elevated temperatures as the core or slug in the solenoid heats, expands (slightly) and sticks more in the coil.

Pump whine is the hallmark of this mode of failure in these transmissions. It's a starved pump. As these are gear type pumps, one with blocked suction will make a whine/growl. I concur with a Gibbons flush'n'fill and check the dogbone torque mount on the front of the transmission to the subframe. The rubber can completely seperate in that bushing, leading to lash. Replacement is only about $40.

I would get going on that rebuild if you arent put off by it. The 2001 is so special, it has its own thread here for transmission trouble. To quote Jim.. "Dont buy a 2001 unless it runs perfectly" If he has a (early symptoms) failing 2001 trans, I'd skip the rebuild and proceed to finding a good us...

Re: 2001 V70 Auto-trans woes

I've not encountered any issues with the stock trans cooler in a 2001 V70 T5. There's a port on the valve body that opens and closes to allow cooler flow. Perhaps get the car hot and check to see if you have good flow at the cooler supply port? As for rebuilds and junkyard transmissions, keep a few ...

You can use some simple lumber for the bridge to hold and lower the engine.

I used a jack and ratchet strap to raise the trans back into position. Presumably the manual is a fair bit lighter.

Here's my swap with photos. I put an 02 trans into my 01. If you have an 03, the procedure is identical, but your replacement transmissions has to be a 2003 or 2004 only.

Rotated tires back to original position and the vibration is a tenth of what it was. So it's tire/wheel related.

Will go get the tires balanced but I'm probably looking at new tires soo, I would guess.

The filter is clogged, that's replaceable with the transmission removed. But where'd the material in the filter come from? It has to be worn clutch pack friction material. You're likely to find at least one trashed clutch pack.

Glad to hear it worked. Sorry to hear about the wasted sensor, but it certainly beats scrapping the car over a pushed pin in a connector. Long term, I'd take a look at the connector body. Pins rarely move in these, so I'd suspect the plastic body has cracked and the little numb the holds the pin is ...

If it is actually the input speed sensor, you're looking at a $90, new. I'd hardly throw the towel in over a part like that. Here's a pdf on troubleshooting the speed sensors. Easily checked with a multimeter on resistance setting. Should read 3-7ohms. http://www.valvebodypros.com/assets/aw55-50sn-t...

The battery will never reset the adaptation and the adaptation doesn't have anything to do with sensor failures.

You could try extracting the pins from the connector and swapping them over.

Ok. Did still swap the front and rear (input speed and output speed) sensors and observe the behavior.

On my 2001 and on 02's I can verify the two sensors share a common connector. The front one should be the yellow and white wires. I believe the back one has grey wires.

That's a blocked filter starving the pump. The filter cannot be replaced without opening the transmission. Further, where'd the material in the filter come from? Likely at least one clutch pack shot.

Here's the new (used, but new to me) transmission getting cleaned up, checked out and a new filter installed. If the transmission is out of the car, it's about an hour job. The biggest pain is getting the pump assembly back into the unit properly after the filter is installed. The 1-2 clutch pack is...

Sigh..... that sounds more like a bench build job to me. That's what I'll need to do. Thanks for the input. Yes, it's a fairly involved bench rebuild. Not that there's not much of an option. So this at-home rebuild made it about 18 months. Next up, a used and relatively low mile 2002 S60 AW55-50SN is sitting in my garage at the moment. By serial number this should have been a late 2002 unit. Externally, it has been degreased and washed. Internally, it has a new filter. The fluid inside ...

Smileyboy, no. A 2001-2002 are interchangeable only among those years. Then 2003-2004, then 2005-after. So, there are three different "phases" of AW55's in these cars.

I did find something strange this evening. I reinstalled the valve body loosely and used vida to change the state of each S1-S5 solenoid. All clicked, except S4. I swapped the wires for S4 and S5. S4 clicked and S5 did not. Does anyone have a wiring diagram showing where the purple wire in that loom...

Re: 2001 V70 T5 Auto transaxle problems

So I've completely disassembled the valve body. No obvious signs of wear really. A few small bits of varnish looking substance found, but doesn't seem like a smoking gun. I've cleaned it all up and loosely assembled until the new gasket kit arrives. The front plate's gasket has many cracks in it. Is...

Re: 2001 V70 T5 Auto transaxle problems

The valve body has been removed. No readily visible blockages in any ports. No sign of the missing dipstick material. All solenoid resistances seem ok. S1-S5 are 13 +/- 0.5. SLT, SLS and SLU are 5.5-5.6. Is there a way to trigger these while out of the car? I have access to a programmable power supp...

Re: 2001 V70 T5 Auto transaxle problems

So after running all of the fluid I could drain through a coffee filter, nary one shaving or bit of clutch material or metal was present. So I don't think the internals of the transmission itself were harmed. That leads me to believe the valve body is jacked up and apparently there's a blockage in l...

Re: 2001 V70 T5 Auto transaxle problems

First findings this morning. Fluid looks healthy and debris free. Bright red and nothing on the drain plug when I wiped it. Interestingly, the tip of the dipstick is gone. Could that have been sucked into the valvebody passages to block line pressure?

Next up, I need to pull this valvebody out.

Re: 2001 V70 T5 Auto transaxle problems

no, not always. you'd need to tap into the pressure test ports to verify that the torque converter is spinning the input, and thus spinning the pump. it's quite possible a failed VB is not engaging the pistons to actuate the bands in the transmission, or worn piston bores let enough fluid past that...

Re: 2001 V70 T5 Auto transaxle problems

So the plan for the weekend is to drain and inspect the fluid for shavings/bits of metal and/or friction material. The fluid in there is only about 2 weeks old, so if' it's loaded up with anything, it's a harbinger that a grenade went off in the internals. If all looks good with the fluid, but I hav...

I'm in the St Louis, Missouri area.

Wouldn't the "sitting in drive, throttle wide open and no motion" indicate the torque converter is junked? Would replacing the valvebody help me? Whichever route I go, I'll do the removal/install myself.

Replace with Volvo rebuilt transmission. $3500-4000 out of pocket. Replace torque converter with Volvo unit. $1000-1500 out of pocket. Does...

The car has 144K on it. Bought at 128K. I've fixed a few minor issues, like the EVAP leaking hose and a loose connection on the MAF, but otherwise it's been a great car. I too am worried about catastrophic failure in the transmission at this point. I'm just surprised it was a sudden issue and that i...

PNP switch seems to be properly indicating, so the car "knows" what gear is requested.

I can hear the various solenoids engage/disengage as the PNP switch is manipulated.

2001 V70 T5 Auto transaxle problems

As the title says, I'm having serious transaxle problems with my 2001 V70 T5 Auto. This started three days ago (Friday.) I was on the highway at about 70MPH, cruise engaged. The RPM's picked up momentarily, and the cruise disengaged. For the next 5-10 miles on the way home, it would occasionally rev...

Re: 2001 V70 Crank no Start

So if the car starts with the relay simulated closed AND you're getting voltage at the relay coil socket, you can rule out the fuel pump and probably the CEM as the culprits. Hopefully it's a simple, low cost fix. Here's what I think is occurring. The 11.7 volts should be plenty to pull the relay in...

Re: 2001 V70 Crank no Start

As an electrical engineer, it's hard to believe that the relay coil is so weak that voltage droop of just 2.5% keeps it from pulling in. Can you verify that, if the relay pulls in, the car will start fine?

Smoothed slightly, but still rough. Tempted to take it for a drive to try to blow the oil out. Quite a bit of smoke from the turbo. I...

Just to update anyone else about to do this. It CAN be done without touching any axle or suspension components (at least on the 2001 V70 T5.) You'll need to drop the last three sets of exhaust hangers and let the muffler touch the ground. You can then get the muffler heat shield out of the way. Pryi...

2001 V70 T5 EVAP J-tube replacement (P0442)

I recently bought a 2001 V70 T5 and am quite happy with my purchase. I am working through a "punch list" of repairs. Right now, the most annoying of these is a recurring P0442 code. I've replaced a cracked gas cap seal. I've located at least one crack in the EVAP canister J-tube thanks to this site....
