I noticed the broken right rear door handle mount on the '04 XC90 seems to have finished breaking off, though the handle part that came off is actually intact.

2004 XC90 T5 ticking sound with engine off

Today I noticed an odd ticking sound coming from the top of the 5-cylinder engine — after turning off the engine. It’s a 2004 with 85,000 miles and only about 1,500 miles since the last oil change (synthetic). Here’s what it sounds like: https://youtu.be/p9ZCgYSUQRg Is there cause for concern? It wa...

Went back in to try to figure out the no-crank situation with the ’98 T5, checking all the fuses and relays, cleaning the starter wire, and removing the battery to look for loose cables. Almost bought the farm in NJ today. An RV pulling a Jeep decided he would pull off the shoulder at the I-87 I 287 split in Northern Jersey, and pulled across 4 lanes of traffic form a stop to take the other exit Five of us locked up, three spun out , I ended up on the hashed out center median betwe...

2000 V70 MT with oddly low RPMs Topic is solved

Hello, all! My '00 V70 MT has been nonstop with the P0600 code ( https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=90151 ) lately and acting strange with RPMs. If I'm coasting to a stop and put it in neutral, the RPMs drop down to around 300-500, but only until I come to a complete stop, ...

Peeked under the hood of the T5 to show my brother a crumbling polyurethane upper engine mount that the PO had installed, only to find that it had completely disintegrated. Amazingly, he had a spare one along with the press to install it. He also checked Blue Steel, which had a bit too much play in ...

Those gaps are huge, I’ll guess .045 inches. I didn't even think to check the gap on the old ones, but I think I'll do that tomorrow! This weekend, I drove the T5 about 230 miles to Hunter, New York, for a friend's birthday weekend, clocking in at 29 mpg by the time I got home. It would've been hig...

I saw a Fiat 500 getting towed on the side of I-287 last week and thought what it shame that such a cute car could cause such headaches. I owned a 2009 Mini Cooper, and that thing was super fun to drive, much like a go-kart on steroids. Parking was AMAZING, even on SoHo on weekends. RIP, Cinquecento.

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Today, the '00 V70 started and stalled a few times before I finally got it to stay on. This used to happen only upon fueling up the car but now seems to be occurring a couple of times a week. SRS + ETS lights were on. Cleared codes (P0440 and P1670), and now ETM light is off.

Re: Rate your skills - the official MVS poll

Too modest! Pulling a VR6 engine out of one of the most inconvenient body designs (EuroVan), plucking the engine, separating the transmission, replacing timing chains and a torque converter, and putting it all back together (well, almost) qualifies as a 4 for sure. Or at least it will once it's all ...

I took the '98 V70 to my trusted shop for a wheel alignment. I could've sworn that I was off by a thread when replacing the outer tie rod to replace a torn boot, and it had bugged me for the longest time. But the shop said they took it for a test drive and got it on the machine — and it doesn't need...

Ha! Basically, it's a parts car. It doesn't help that the XC AWD is on a pitched driveway, we're still working on the EuroVan, and I've got a T5 that I have yet to tinker with. My brother found a set of Volvo integrated rear-seat boosters, which I installed today in the '98 V70. The 6-year-old tried it out and liked it, so that was a highlight. Also picked up a set of OE steel wheels and hubcaps for snow tires for cheap (and cleaned them)!

With the red wire hooked up like that, you are doing what turning the key is supposed to do - providing 12 V to where the green wire connects. Since your wire works but the key doesn't, then as dj_v70 said, something is wrong in the regular electrical path from the battery to the where the green wi...

I decided to attempt removal of the starter motor in the cheap '99 XC AWD that I picked up for its third row. 1999 V70 XC AWD starter replacement

I decided to tackle starter removal in the 1999 V70 XC AWD I picked up for its third row, but I seem to be stuck on gaining access around the turbo inlet (?) pipe that runs under the intake manifold. I tried removing the fan assembly, then the fan itself, but I can't get either out with the hard pla...

Re: What filters to use?

I'm running a Fram activated charcoal cabin filter (it was on sale). It seems to filter out some smells, but it won't stop the rich running car in front of you, or the smell of burning oil, or help at all if you drive past a dairy farm. Re: What filters to use?

My understanding is that Volvo uses Mann and Mahle oil filters as OE equipment, depending on your model/year. Bosch is also well regarded. I'd probably stick with the same for air filters and fuel filters but go for whatever cabin air filter is on sale!

Good to know. Thanks! I should've mentioned, too: The dash is also lit up like a xmas tree, including a flashing up arrow. Yup, definitely a TCM problem is the up arrow is flashing. Motivated, I tackled the right sway end link. It did not go as smoothly.

Noticed a dark spot on the driveway and had a slight freak-out, thinking the '98 V70 was leaking oil. Turns out to be washer fluid dripping from the right headlight wiper hose.

It looks like there's a tee, but am I missing a hose or cap on the end?

Since we're sharing pictures of saggy rear ends, I thought I'd offer mine for critique. I hadn't thought to measure from the wheel center on the 2000 V70 base MT, instead trying to determine the height of the tire to the fender. It's about 1.25" on the rear, and about 2.5" in the front. Thanks, all. It looks like I'll be getting the filter wrench, and maybe another housing.

I am all about cost per use, so I'll add another Volvo to the list, too!

Re: Broken fuel line clip to fuel filter

Don't mean to be jumping on this thread. But had the same thing happen today to my brother's V70. (I think the boy just doesn't know his strength!) This leaked all over the place! Little red pieces of plastic came out of it... v70_broken_fuel_line_connec.jpg So we ended up using this fuel lin...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

A day after trying to get this oil filter housing off the 2000 V70 by hand, I gave up and took three trips to AutoZone and one to Advance Auto Parts to settle on a filter wrench. The plastic housing has a torque spec of 25nm but I swear it's more like 250nm. After clawing up the exterior for a few m...

Congratulations! That's less than I paid for my 1998 V70 base with 146k miles in 2013.

What's first on the repair schedule? :)

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Today, I replaced the broken rear-view mirror in the 2000 V70 — with one I bought off eBay for $19 shipped! The process was easier than I had expected. After gently prying out the map light covers with a small screwdriver in the top-side slot, I removed the plastic lighting assembly with a T-10 Torx...

Any updates on how the great oil replacement went? Any noticable differences? What condition was the old oil in?

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Today, I opened the hood, stared at the misfiring engine for a few minutes, thought about swapping things around to see if the problem stayed in cyl 5 or travelled, and closed it again. Major case of the fuggits. Been there! That was me with the turbo replacement on my old 2001 Saab 9-5. It only to...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

The wheel guide pin should hold the rotor against the hub. Is yours missing? I usually use one wheel bolt to hold the rotor in place, opposite the guide pin, when I reinstall everything. Yes, it was seized and snapped when I tried to remove it. I did end up using a couple of wheel bolts to hold the...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Thanks for the oil cap gasket suggestion, everyone! On my '98 V70 at 156k miles, i remember the oil dipstick was smoking. When my brother and I replaced the PCV, the hoses were in fact clogged. I'm now hoping the '00 V70 doesn't need the work yet. I've still got a coolant system refresh and a timing...

]I didn't have time to redo the brakes yet, as I had to keep an eye on the kids, so I replaced the cabin air filter, the engine air filter and the spark plugs, as well as replaced the main window switch on the new-to-me '00 V70, 182k miles. The cabin air filter was OE and had tabs to hold it in plac...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Tackled the front brakes today, with a couple of hitches. First, the left outer brake pad wouldn't fit in the bracket, as if the tolerance was off. I put the original back on, with about 50 percent of the pad let. Then the right side guide pin was seized, and it snapped off when trying to remove it....

Re: How many miles did you drive your P80 over Thanksgiving? Topic is solved

Zero miles today, though I did haul the family to the NYC parade and back on the bus and train, an hour each way. They spent more time eating snacks and drinking hot chocolate than watching any balloons or marching bands.

Thirty-three miles yesterday to visit the folks and another 33 tomorrow!

Thanks! How long does a Volvo clutch usually last? I believe it's on its original.

That bar might come in handy for the EuroVan timing chain job. :)

Awesome tip, thank you! I suspect I'll be making a few orders for it, so I'll definitely add bleeder screws to the list.

If I win the lottery someday, I could make fixing up this V70 duo my full-time job.

Re: Burned valve. Car put to rest on driveway.

That driveway spot sounds a lot like the one in our little corner of New Jersey. It's where my fixer-upper 01 Saab 9-5 V6 sat for two years without a turbo. My brother and I spent until 4 am one day soon after I bought it just getting the thing off. It felt like such a victory, though it took me nea...

I picked up a silver MT 2000 V70 last week for cheap, and started with the rear brakes / parking brake. Things were pretty rusty back there, but everything went off without a hitch! Need to readjust the parking brake after a short test drive, but otherwise a marked improvement. IMG_20171122_11513583...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

I believe there's some type of valve on the top of the tank that can't be accessed unless it's dropped... you might want to check that if you have had P0455 or the like recently. And obviously check/replace any hoses you have access to. Thanks, bmdubya. It looks like I'll be ordering the following:...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

All I did today was look under my 1998 V70 after I smelled gasoline from the driveway. There I found what appeared to be a leak from the fuel filler tube where it connects to the fuel tank. So it looks like I'll be replacing the gasket. Is there anything else I should be inspecting or replacing whil...
