Ok, I was going to scrap the car because having a shop do the repair was going to be way more than it was worth. A local shop quoted me $500 for a completely rebuild head and I'll doo this myself. There are lots of good tutorials around and the work looks tedious but not overly hard. While I'm at it...

once I confirm the valves are bent I'll need to find a good ocal repair shop for a quote. at the speed i do things it would take a year for me to do change the head. thanks, Jon

The belt didnt break but it looks like the tension pulley lost tension and the the belt came off. im not sure that better or worse but I can use the belt to see if I still have a good valvetrain. It's definitely the timing belt. I was able to see enough with a flashlight by removing the top belt cover. Based on the racket that when down when it broke I'm sure the valves are toast.
