Re: Gunk in the oil dipstick tube

You can't clean it out, but should treat the symptoms just like you did. Actually, you can. The dipstick tube is removable and can be flushed  Whether it's needed or not, that's a different matter. I've cut a length of pipe foam insulation and wrapped it around the dipstick tube. It seems to ...

Re: 850 1996 water in cabin blower fan

I think I've sorted the water problem. The drains were fine, but there was a build-up of old composting leaves that allowed for water to seap through the rubber barrier between the shroud and the opening to the duct. Sorry, no pictures this time. Also managed to swap out the burned coolant fan and i...

Re: 850 1996 water in cabin blower fan

Thanks, Neil. I haven't been able to check the drains yet as the radiator fan decided to quit on me two days ago resulting in overheating and loss of 3 quarts of coolant. So I'm now sourcing a new Volvo ECT sensor and a used fan. It's about time for a bigger overhaul anyway, the right hand wiper arm...

850 1996 water in cabin blower fan

I replaced the cabin blower fan today even though I was a bit pressed for time. When I removed the old fan, I saw about 4-5 fl oz of water at the bottom of the white duct where the fan sits. The carpet on both sides is dry, and I haven't had any loss of coolant so I'm fairly certain it was only rain...

I'm still following this topic as fuel economy is always interesting.
However, my guess is you'll lose the money you save here and now by over-inflating your tires to the additional wear on them.
Short term saving might lead to a long term loss. Just saying :)

My '96 850 cleared inspection today, so it's now street legal for another two years :D The inspector suggested the handbrake to be adjusted and more worryingly he found the rubber on the driver's side tie rod end had split. Re: 2017 Owners Retrospective - What were your Volvo milestones in 2017?

After a two months long period of having my '96 850 N/A at the garage waiting for a replacement engine, I finally got it back. The "new" engine has only done 123K miles, perfect condition, with the rest of the car having done 185K miles. And as a bonus it came with a PS pump that doesn't whirr (yet)...

Not necessarily so. My car came with only the immobilizer, no alarm nor remote operated door locks.

For European versions of Volvo, it all depends on which extras were ordered with the car, unlike the fully decked US versions.

If it isn't overheating and there are no leaks from radiator it isn't due for replacement. T-stat normally only if the water temperature drops when driving long straights. Re: Instrument panel swap possible?

The odometer is easy to fix and you'll put in four (or six) new bulbs at the same time. It shouldn't be too expensive, most likely a lot less expensive than getting another cluster. If the 850 has ODBII (from the late 95 models), you could get it to work with a '97 or '98 S/V70 cluster. Found an arc...

Well, I'm off work on Friday so I'll get in and see what I can determine then. I'm by no means an electronics expert, but as far as I can tell from the wiring diagram, bridging pin 30 to 58 wouldn't help you, as they are already bridged when the light switch is in pos 0. You'll need to bridge pin 6 and 58, but at the same time you have to break the connection between pin 8 and...

I left the ring off our S70 for about ten days and had no problem re-installing it. I wiped the ring threads with a tiny bit of petroleum jelly and then wiped it off with a paper towel leaving as little residue as possible. I fail to see how exposure to humidity or whatever would cause the threads ...

I've seen that tool before, it looks nice. Problem is the $35 it costs in the US will quickly triple with shipping, customs (plus customs handling fee of $25) and 25% value added tax before it reaches my door step. For the clearcoat use the two component stuff with an activator in the bottom of the can only. It may quite easily end up having the texture of an orange but can be carefully wet-sanded smooth using grit 1000-2000 after a couple of weeks, then waxed/buffed.

What does one do if the locking ring on the fuel tank which holds the fuel pump in place has been left off for more than the Volvo recommended one hour only? Caspar, test with a piece of wire connected to a good chassis ground and put the other end of that wire to the handbrake switch wire. It may be the warped rotor that makes the wobble. Why it only happens at 65-70 mph may be due to the resonance/vibration generated at that exact speed. While you're replacing the brakes etc next weekend, double check everything for tightness too when you have easy access anyway.

The CBs I used in the good old days had a transceiver with 4-5 watts, something the pins you've found should easily handle. If it was me, I'd simply cut the big red wire on pin 1 of the plug, then either solder my own connector on the wire or solder the wire from the radio directly onto it. It should be fine to ground the radio directly to chassis. If you should experience problems with electrical interference, it's easy...

Right. There could be a small rubber o-ring under one of the cogs, the one with the metal retainer in it. If you can get to that, it might be replaceable. But how to source a new o-ring, that's another thing.

If we forget the wiring diagram for a second, measuring resistance on an electric motor won't give you the max power consumption as it depends on torque and a lot of other things. Neil, You can put an inline fuse on the black (ground/negative) wire of the three going to the wiper motor. That way you will protect both the intermittent and constant power to the motor. Hmm, it's from VADIS, if you can post or pm me your VIN, I can see if there's another one for your car.

But the lower bolt should be put in much the same way as #23 bolt, it might "just" be a matter of moving the spring loaded part of the tensioner a little to be able to get the bolt in.

Or use the car battery. Just make sure to have a 2A or 5A fuse inline. Battery chargers, especially the "intelligent" ones can fluctuate quite a lot in both power and voltage and need the bigger load of a battery to really work. I use a small variable lab powersupply that has an output from 0-30 vol...

Less than one (1) amp is needed as the motor is really small. If you have a small power supply, then use this instead of a car battery. If you only have a car battery, make sure to put a small fuse (5A or smaller) on the live wire to prevent damage done to the wire harness and/or central locking rel...

1996 850 no speedo

I've resoldered my ABS module and there are no ABS codes being thrown anymore. But, I lost the speedo signal somehow, at first it was intermittent, now it's 99.9999% gone. Did a 120 mile drive the other day, and the odometer clocked 0.8 miles. I have pulled the module and carefully checked my solder...

The program Vol-fcr will reset the service light and can pull most codes from the OBDII interface on the S70 97 and 98. You'll need a laptop running windows (XP or Win7/8) and a VAG-com cable.

Yeah, combatkarl and cuhfs are right, it's about 3 inches of the window trim that has come lose from the roof line.

I'll get some epoxy glue to fix it up, right now the car is grounded due to a failed tie rod and too much play in the rack.

Thanks a bunch though, guys.

Contitech seems to be what most people recommend here. As far as the water pump go, you can pull it and see if the impellers are still solid and there is no obvious wear/tear. It is a really beautiful car.

But, I would say it's also a classic case of spending a lot more money on parts that you won't be able to get back when selling. Personally, I'd drive it until running into a repair that simply cost too much money compared to getting another car. Then, buy the S60 T6 :)

Heh, I like when you get a bit of a discussion out of asking a question. So to summarize the info I got from here, multi-prong plugs are bad, unless they are either Volvo OE or NGK. The NGK will be more expensive ($55 incl intl shipping) for me to get here than the Volvo OEs ($35, no shipping requir...

Re: 1996 850 B5202S engine oil/spark plugs

Hi Misha.
You're absolutely right. My only excuse is that I had that car back in 01 and somehow got that mixed up with the year the car was from. It's from 99 at least according to the Swedish motor authorities. (I lived in Sweden back then).

Re: 1996 850 B5202S engine oil/spark plugs

Thank you both.

I'll go for the Volvo OE plugs and 5W40 oil with a desludge treatment first.

Re: 1996 854 ABS light, instrument lighting

I have a feeling that it might be one or more of the ABS rings, I've forgotten the correct term for them, that might be at fault. I've driven the car twice now after I resoldered the pins, and at engine start, the ABS light is on, then it turns off after the self-test (after 50 yards or so of drivin...

Re: 1996 854 ABS light, instrument lighting

Hi Pete. I was lucky that one of my socket wrench sets had all the E type sockets in it, so I didn't have to buy the E5 for the removal of the module, plus it's a slim one. The socket I have is a 1/4" and I put it on a 1/4" to ½" converter. 20160109_024827.jpg This worked really well and I only had ...

1996 850 B5202S engine oil/spark plugs

I have recently bought this car and I've been looking at the service book. It has been serviced fairly regularly, up until about 150k miles. After that it's more sporadic. Anyway, question for this topic is regarding the engine oil. I checked the level with the oil dipstick and that's ok, but there ...

Re: 1996 854 ABS light, instrument lighting

Thanks again Lee. I was getting worried when I had a look at what pick'n'pays want for the hydryalic pump unit so now that I know the pump is ok, I can probably sleep a little easier tonight. :) I've ordered a cheap vag com cable on Ebay, hoping that I can get it to work with VOL-FCR and have it tel...

Re: 1996 854 ABS light, instrument lighting

Well, I tried to check the ABS pump motor. It made a lot of noise when I hooked it up to the battery, in fact it's so loud that I can hear it over the engine when inside the car.

So I'm guessing the pump is not working properly due to the noise it makes, a really loud whirring noise?

Re: 1996 854 ABS light, instrument lighting

Thank you for your reply Lee. I did some more tests today, figured I might as well try to check the ABS sensors since the terminals are so easily accessible. Unfortunately they all measured from 996-1012 ohms, which from my understanding is well within the tresholds. I went ahead and did the rebuild...

1996 854 ABS light, instrument lighting

This is my first post on this board so I hope you'll treat me kindly. :) I've been trying to find information regarding some issues I have with my recent purchase, a Volvo 850, 1996 model. It's the 2.0 liters, 126BHP non-turbo version. Unfortunately my search has left me with more questions than ans...
