Re: Financial Distress Parts Program

I would like to donate a 1998 V70 T5 that runs fairly well, needs some work to be legal (exhaust), needs other work in general (transmission, rear bumper, rear window). It potentially is transportation and if not is probably a reasonable parts car. Is there some way to get this to the FDPP or other ...

Re: 2009 S60 keys won't turn in door lock - SOLVED (kinda)

Same problem with 2004 XC70. Dead battery. Both keys insert easily in driver door lock but do not turn to open the mechanism. Keys look l like they're all the way in but who knows. Tried multiple rounds of gentle jiggling before and after Lock-ease carbon lubricant. No luck. In desperation jacked th...

Thanks to all. Could not charge with "Battery Tender" or start the car with an external power pack. Read "0" vdc. I know that more heroic rescue protocols are reported. dead battery Topic is solved

1998 V70 won't start this Monday am. Battery reads 2.3 VDC. No current leak left on to explain dead battery (such as lights, radio, etc.). Started vigorously and ran fine Saturday. However, I have felt the power windows were sluggish for awhile. Not started at all Sunday. Is this a truly dead (as in...

Re: questions about estimate for broken front coil spring

As CN90 advises I plan to replace everything in the front suspension that is not relatively new. The ball joint boot looks new and the joint itself is not loose when I pull and push on it. But the boots of the lower control arm are cracked. I suspect the ball joint but not the control arm was replac...

Everything I read says Loctite red is extremely difficult and requires heat to reverse - don't use it unless you never plan to loosen that connection. Use blue for anything you anticipate reversing. While "practicing" I discovered that the axle bolt is incorrectly torqued (see below). As expected, torquing to 35 Nm didn't tighten the bolt further. Unexpectedly, backing off ~130 degrees followed by torquing to 35 Nm returned the bolt to the initial position - exactly. Torquing further to spec (3...

Re: 2004 XC70 Rear Spring it's the spring not the muffler Topic is solved

The idea of using the vehicle jack to decompress the lower control arm came from here: http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?17428-Rear-Strut-Installation-at-100k-miles&p=187448#post187448 Maybe the photo from that link, attached here, is clearer? Re: 2004 XC70 Rear Spring it's the spring not the muffler Topic is solved

I did feel it was safe. I wasn't under the car and the jack stand/jack/backup were solid. I did notice the brakes - thanks. Two remaining issues stand between me and success (and avoiding a tow, which would be a sad outcome): 1. Is there a way to properly align the spring seat on the rubber shim? Th...

Re: 2004 XC70 Rear Spring it's the spring not the muffler Topic is solved

I successfully disassembled the broken strut spring/strut/control arm. It took a bunch of coaxing with hammers and pry bars and a second jack to relive tension alternately on the strut and various coils of the broken spring. I don't remember the sequence. Lots of trial and error and eventually it we...

Significant progress. The strut/control arm bolt was easily loosened (breaker bar after BP Blaster/tapping three times over the course of 2 weeks) with the wheel jacked as in a previous post to expose the bolt. I believe these are MacPherson struts. The spring sits between the upper mount, that is bolted to the top of the strut, and a spring perch that is part way down and integral to the strut. Normally, the entire spring/strut/upper mount assembly is removed/replaced as a unit. That can't happen now beca...

Double wrenches sound like they might work - thanks. Jacking shifted the spring so a socket and driver can fit - see images. Re: radiator damage 1998 V70 T5 Topic is solved

I warmed the engine thoroughly and still saw a small amount of white "smoke" in the exhaust plus water drops falling from the end of the exhaust pipe. The lifters were entirely silent at this point. The car also throws these codes. 448 Air Pump 442 Air pump system 611 Tank system P0410 Secondary Air...

abscate- Sorry. Didn't see your most recent post before mine. I will keep testing and following levels as you suggest. Fixing a leaking head gasket, if that's what it is, seems like a poor investment so I guess there isn't much to lose. Do any additives work on sticking lifters? Do they do any harm?

Just tested again. White exhaust became less as car warmed up but wasn't entirely gone after seven minutes of running. Clicking mostly but not entirely gone when warm. Seems worse each time I start it up. After running 7 minutes found some milkshake on dip stick in photo. Seems like a very bad sign....

Thanks. I can use some help. I believe this car did produce some white exhaust smoke on cold starts before the radiator failed, but less smoke than now. Some say this can be "normal" condensation for these cars. Weather is currently 40-50˚F with light rain on and off. Maybe this makes for lots of co...

On cold start engine sounds fine and all seems well. Dipstick shows no milkshake before starting (top left photo). 2004 xc70 with intermittent cruise control and radio issues on ignition

Cruise control doesn't function and the radio controls on the steering wheel don't function. Sometimes. But sometimes they do. And the functional state of each is determined at ignition. When starting the car, cruise control may or may not work. And it stays that way until the engine is turned off a...

This is partly so I remember. 15 miles highway driving today, including *very* strong acceleration on the onramp (turbo working well!), up to 80 mph for a short stretch and most of the time at 70-75 mph. New radiator is in. Drove only 20 miles so far. Cold starts without any hesitation, engine runs very smoothly, temp gauge is rock solid, no coolant leak or change in level. The issue was the weight of the tailgate pressured the socket/ball interface so tightly I couldn't disengage it. Once I had someone actually lift the tailgate, not just support it, to relieve that force everything went fine.

Parts correction. New rad is $359 plus ~$280 for new thermostat, hoses, clamps, o-rings etc. The latter would be slightly less OEM and less than half aftermarket (both from IPD) but probably not worthwhile given the overall cost. However, is replacing all hoses/clamps/thermostat reasonable if they s...

Can the engine be warmed with no coolant in the system in order to do a warm compression check? Or would a cold check be worthwhile in this situation? Or does it matter (very much)? Compression check before deciding whether to replace the radiator seems to make sense.
