You should be able to do it with a ribbon cable, too. Are there no connections at all to the cassette unit besides the ribbon? Can you post a photo?

Yes - the CD changer needs to be of a particular type and able to "handshake" using a particular standard with the head unit before the head unit will route any audio signals to the amp. Adapters trick the head unit into believing a CD unit is responding, and then passing through the audio signal ...
