I had a similar experience and it ended up being that MICE had eaten wires in the overhead wiring harness. Good times.

So...I'm pretty sure a mouse got stuck in my a/c fan. I had mouse damage to the wiring harness a few years back and my insurance paid for the repair, after I paid my deductible.
