Long term follow up post to ask what the long term prognosis for this car is. Not long after getting this running last April the angle gear locked up. We removed the gear and ground some teeth off and welded it into a fixed position with the plan to just drive it as front wheel drive only. That work...

It's alive and saved from the scrap yard! A slow but steady project. Thanks for all the helpful guidance. It still has the check engine light on but I expect that to be a minor issue as the engine sounds nice.

As promised, here's a gore pic. I have no idea what the sequence of destruction was but there's a piece of piston turned sideways and wedged between the crank and the block.

Thanks for all the trans info. Obviously not the simple swap I had assumed. We will stick with the original AWD trans for now and try to figure out why it was losing fluid. It may have just been leaking from around the dipstick base but I did not get to personally investigate that before the engine ...

So the front wheel drive C70 transmission is a swap for the AWD XC? Just bolt on the XC angle gear and it's done? I'd think so. If both are turbo they should match. You are correct. I was wrong when I said we got a B5254T. Actually both engines are B5244T. I just double checked the stamped codes. Sorry for the mix up.

I think I see now that the AWD and FWD cars have the same transmission but the XC has the angle gear bolted on and then a shorter drive axle.

Thanks for all the tips. We pulled a complete B5254T from a 2000 C70 today. The car had been hit from behind so we assumed it was in running condition up until that point. No way to check compression while there. Engine seemed to be in pretty good shape with no sludge visible in the head or any leak...
