Compressor Bypass Valve Missing Bolt Topic is solved

While chasing some low/sporadic boost on my 1999 V70 AWD, I decided to inspect the CBV. When I got the heat shields off, I found that one of the 10mm bolts is missing from the CBV. That seems to indicate the source of my erratic boost. The trouble is, I now cannot find the 10mm bolt online anywhere....

Re: LED Headlight Conversion (revisited)

I have the ABM projector headlight assembly with some Auxbeam GT Series LEDs for low and Auxbeam FS3 LEDs for high beams. They make great light and do not blind anyone else. HID's will damage the reflector and the lens though it is likely the UV rather than the heat. I do not think HID's get as hot ...

Re: 2000 V70 xc junk yard save

Oil is likely PCV, turbo oil lines, or oil cap gasket. If you have fuses to spare you could try to see when it pops. By this I mean does it pop as soon as the key is set to run or does the engine actually have to be running? Is it as soon as it starts or only when you give it gas? Does it have to be...

Re: Odd Errors after Cylinder Head R&R | Timing Issues?

Back at it again... It is possible that I am losing boost, but this error will pop up even if I just let the car idle, so it is unlikely the cause. I corrected a loose ground today on the back of the cylinder head. It was kind of hiding because the connector was bent a bit down around the top of the...

I would try out the Mishimoto fan. They make some pretty good parts.

Try to preserve as much factory connection for wiring as possible and if you go for a direct spliced connection, do it right and solder and shrink.

Or take abscate's fan.

Right, but I'm thinking the cylinders are all firing properly. The compression numbers seem good. The engine runs smooth. I know a misfire when there is one even if it's slight. Re: Odd Errors after Cylinder Head R&R | Timing Issues?

Time for a compression test. You need to get down and dirty with this one. Do you have 50 psi fuel pressure at the rail, measured by gauge? Compression is 165-167 across all 5 cylinders and it holds. That's measured by my mechanic and then by myself with my cheap gauge. I'm not sure on fuel pressur...

What is the gap on the spark plugs? Out of the box they tend to run around 0.045 and you need to gap them at 0.028 and error on the tight side. ...Lee Lee, good idea. It seems like it could be as simple as splicing the connectors for the V70 lights into the 850 wiring. I think they both take H3 bulbs. Re: 2nd Head Gasket in 12 Months | Rant and Advice Wanted Please Topic is solved

Alright, I finally took it to the shop to get it checked out and make sure it was indeed the head gasket. It was not. It was a cracked radiator. Apparently it was allowing air/coolant to escape while running and then partially sealing causing some weird pressure and temperature changes in the coolin...

Mine doesn't even use half a quart between changes every 5000 miles.

Something is definitely up. Compression test, thicker oil, PCV, etc. as others have mentioned. Start small.

Re: 2nd Head Gasket in 12 Months | Rant and Advice Wanted Please Topic is solved

S10, You might be right, but I paid $300 to have the head measured, resurfaced, and pressure checked by a different shop in Lexington, KY after the other shop got the head off. Abscate and rspi, I have checked compression on all cylinders and run a test with the indicator fluid to check for exhaust ...

I am not sure if he does, but I might be inclined to drive by there and have a look. The place came highly recommended by several people and the owner seems to know what he is doing and talking about. They are pretty much Volvo exclusive, but occasionally do some other import vehicles. As for the ne...

2nd Head Gasket in 12 Months | Rant and Advice Wanted Please Topic is solved

Hello everyone, Get comfortable. This is a long read. The TLDR (Too Long Didn't Read for those who might not know) is at the bottom. I have a 1998 S70 GLT. I bought it a year and a half ago and have put nearly 30k miles on it and loved every one of them. I care for this care obsessively and constant...

When my oil cap seal leaked there was never any oil right near the cap either. I would still replace oil cap seal. It is a cheap part and usually needs done once a year anyway.

This is a long shot, but maybe some computer cleaner? It is the same stuff as R-134 refrigerant and when the can is held upside down it comes out as very cold liquid tetrafluoroethane. It boils at -15 degrees Fahrenheit and it isn't terribly flammable although open flame should be avoided and you sh...

Re: Best LED Headlight Replacements

I run Auxbeam F-S3 LEDs in ABM projector housings for both low and high beams. They are 4000 lumens each and throw light further and cleaner than the halogen and HIDs I have tried. I had a Kensun HID kit in there, but the ABM housings flicker a bit with HIDs so I switched to LEDs. I can see really f...

Also check the PTC nipple that goes into the intake just before the turbo. I had my PCV system fully replaced when I had my headgasket replaced and was still building some pressure under higher load and shooting oil out. Eventually it blew the cam seal as well and I had to have that replaced to the ...

Re: Best Grade of Gasoline

Some have reported that mid-grade (89,90) works well in their vehicle and probably so, but the ethanol loves our rubber hoses and seals. Let me amend my comment a bit. The statement regarding the ethanol should have been below the statement about mid-grade fuel and not separated but the ", but" con...

Re: Best Grade of Gasoline

I put Shell 93 in mine always. I used to put regular because the manual said it's okay, but had poorer fuel economy and lower performance (noticed when merging/passing). It seems like it takes a tank or two of the "good stuff" before any difference is noted. I attribute that to the ECU adjusting fue...

Re: All of a sudden she started making this loud knocking/tapping

I had the same thing happen with my 98 S70 GLT. Check all vacuum lines. Particularly the one I believe is for the evap system. It connects to a check valve and I think a T-fitting. I didn't pay much attention because when it happened all I cared about was that it might be the source of the noise for...

I see you already purchased a hose, but... Two words: Silicone Hoses I switched to silicone radiator hoses and have done expansion tank hoses now with it too. I had a bad lower leak from a basically brand new hose from O'Reilly auto parts. I would leave streams of coolant and had to carry a gallon e...

Re: no teeth on starter, 1997 Volvo S70 T5, won't turn over by hand

Replace the starter with a new one from IPD or elsewhere, and give it a crank. It should fire right up. If instead of turning over, it screeches, grinds, or whines, then you may also have damaged teeth on the flywheel. You will know it right off the bat. I haven't done a starter on my 98 Volvo S70 GL...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 - Large Coolant Leak, but Where is it?

I think someone already broke the petcock. At least it doesn't leak. Anyway, yesterday I did the fix. Rubber for both the heater hose and the radiator hose, but both with lifetime warranty from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. While I had all the intake and most cooling hoses off, I also replaced some vacuum ...

Alright, I know this thread is not getting much attention, but I am going to continue posting for posterity sake. I found the hose that was leaking. It was the upper heater hose where it connects to the block. The clamp had been tightened so tightly that it cut the hose. The shop that did the head g...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 - Large Coolant Leak, but Where is it?

Here is where I am now with it: Running it to OT results in steady drips. Revving it once it is warm results in flowing/gushing of coolant from regions unknown. Turbo - Checks out fine. No leaks anywhere aside from a tiny oil leak (to be dealt with later when I source a 16t :D ) Heater core - checks...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 - Large Coolant Leak, but Where is it?

So in looking more closely at it, I have decided that it will probably be easiest to just replace all of the hoses at and around the turbo. All of them look mighty old and they are relatively cheap; even for OEM. It isn't clear which one is leaking so I will just go for all of them and probably not ...

Re: Still overheating - 98 V70 T - sudden coolant loss

I have a local shop ready to do a head gasket for $1600, maybe more. Would you do it? What would you do? I just had mine done for a similar head gasket leak. I could not confirm it with the combustion gas in coolant test or a compression test, but eventually dyed and pressurized the cooling system ...
