Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

The 850 passed state inspection and emissions testing with flying colors at 65328 miles on the odometer. At 65450 miles the engine cooling fan wasn’t shutting off when turning the ignition off. It would continue to run for about a full minute before turning off. I replaced the fan relay and the cool...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Oil change today at just over 64,500 miles and finally figured out the keyless entry. Posted a write up for anybody else trying to figure theirs out. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=91285&p=521974#p521974 If I understand your post correctly, your 1996 850 has less than ...

Re: 1996 Volvo 850 GLT - 2 step central locking (keyless?) entry

I'm glad you managed to work it out. I've just managed to get mine working too. I keep unlocking and locking it as I walk past, just because I can. Both my previous 850 (purchased in February 2014) and the current one (June 2018) came without working remotes. There was a non-functioning one with th...

Re: 1996 Volvo 850 GLT - 2 step central locking (keyless?) entry

Didn’t give up on this and got the keyless entry to work on the ‘96 850 GLT. Found some helpful info here and used a couple of his photos for this post: https://volvo850wagon.wordpress.com/2014/02/23/90-adding-keyless-entry-part-1/ I did not have the black box receiver behind the glovebox. Removed t...

Re: 1996 Volvo 850 GLT - 2 step central locking (keyless?) entry

AFAIK that remote is for 1998 and later cars only. Check the fitment tab in this IPD listing: https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4818/115608-volvo-alarm-remote-key-fob-cover-4-button-with-buttons-aftermarket-vr946-9166200 Ok... so I purchased the remote. Found one for less than $30. Went through the p...

Went back to the pick a part yard and pulled the exhaust from the ‘97 850. A very well spent $27 I think!

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Swapped out the beige speaker covers with the gray from the donor car I took the carpet out of. I’m liking the contrast of the gray and beige interior.

Re: 1996 Volvo 850 GLT - 2 step central locking (keyless?) entry

The late 96 and all 97 850s don't have the box behind the glovebox, it is under the dash somewhere. They all use the same remote which looks like this: remote.jpg It is programmed to the car as follows: Programming a transmitter If you purchase additional transmitters (max. 4), they must be program...

1996 Volvo 850 GLT - 2 step central locking (keyless?) entry

I only received one key and no FOBs for my 850 when purchased. I purchased blanks from eBay and after many calls I finally found a local locksmith to cut them. All doors lock and unlock properly with the key. Looking under the dash, there is a 2 step central locking relay but when I pulled the glove...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Cruise control is now fully functioning! Replacing the vacuum actuator booster pump under the battery tray and adjusting the cruise cut off switch above the brake switch did the trick. The vacuum pump had a damaged spot that looks like battery acid must have dripped at one time. I had one vacuum hos...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

I was the first person in over 20 years to get the trip computer activated at the dealership. They charged 1/2 hr and ‘tester’ fee - total was probably 10% of cars entire value. But a fabulous thing to fool with when highway driving... 35.6mpg over 300 mile test drive In my ‘96 850 it was plug and ...

Re: WTB: P80 850 suspension, mechanical, and interior parts

I just replaced the beige carpet in my ‘96 850 sedan with gray since I could not find a replacement beige driver’s side in good condition. I have the beige passenger side carpet and rear seat carpet that I took out. They are in good condition. Was going to clean them up and post on eBay but let me k...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Pick a part yard near me finally got an 850 in so I went pickin’ over the weekend! Wow, sounds like you found a gem there with that low mileage. Hopefully the timing belt was replaced for age. Timing belt was one of the first projects completed when I brought her home. She spent about 3 months on j...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Pick a part yard near me finally got an 850 in so I went pickin’ over the weekend! Got a nice set of gray carpet and parts to fix the cruise control (module and vacuum pump). While I had the seats out of my ‘96 850 GLT to replace the carpet I redid the headliner too. Gray carpet actually looks reall...

Re: WTB - Volvo 850 Driver's Side Carpet - Beige

Good thinking! Only thing I can think of right now would be the 850 branded floor mat for that side too but only if in great condition. The one I have is dirty and worn but still holding up. I want to drop and redo the headliner very soon. Maybe anything that has a tendency to crack or break when re...

Re: WTB - Volvo 850 Driver's Side Carpet - Beige

That would be awesome! In the 850 the carpet is in separate pieces. Driver side, passenger side and rear. I only need the driver side molded carpet piece in beige. It’s super simple to remove. Take out the seat, the foot rest and the molding under the door and it comes right out. I removed mine so t...

WTB - Volvo 850 Driver's Side Carpet - Beige

Hey everyone. Just purchased a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT Sedan with less than 55000 miles and have had a busy month getting it roadworthy as my daughter's first car. Many thanks to this forum and to Robert Spinner. I still have a few cosmetic things left to finish up. The thorn in my side is the driver's s...
