Could the headlight problem not be the infamous light switch issue? I remember I lost high beams when that happened to me, although it may have just been failing to latch and still coming on as long as the lever was pulled back, don't remember 100%.

To follow up on this: Volvo USA was able to get me the code. Although the tool on the website did not work and gave an error, probably due to the VIN being from a Euro car, after I contacted customer care with the above images they got back to me with the code in under 6 hours on a Sunday. On my s70 the you replace the entire control arm if the ball joint is bad, its likely similar for you. I believe early 850s had a replaceable ball joint but for any later models you'll have to replace the entire arm.
