I've noticed the lurching occasionally also but no light to match. I was playing with my 'new' '01 in the snow this past winter and noticed the scraping sound also. Also check with your local Starter/ alt shop for pricing and availability. Mine was about $45 from the alt. shop and $95 from a brand name parts house.

The Haynes manual is always worth the $18 if only for the pics. Get one soon, don't wait for the movie. The alt does take a little time. You really should verify the voltage output, but the regulator is most likely the culprit of over charging. Can be had for about $45 at most auto parts stores or local starter/alt shop. Working the Alt too hard can kill it and the Batt as well as the sheet metal through to the fender! It is an easy ...

Those are 8mm 1.25. which is just a course thread 8mm.
1/2" to 3/4" long is good enough.
