Re: Marco's 2003 V70 T5 journey Topic is solved

Today I disconnected the MAF to see what would happen. It has way more power and response and less jerkiness at low throttle. A bit hairy at high boost, but I kind of expected that with disconnected MAF. The untrained wouldn’t even notice a difference except for the CEL it’s about to throw... Funny,...

Ok, so I was hoping the throttle body would be filthy, thereby easily explaining my erratic throttle behaviour. Nope.

Any tips? I fear I shall go mad...

The car was on a hoist today for it’s annual safety check which it passed with flying colours. Mine was more than a quart overfilled when I bought it and had been for a long time by the look of it. Get a loupe ( that’s optics , not a disease or a wolf) and have a closeup look at the big pins. Look for cracking in the solder around the pins. Funny you should say that. There is no solder in evidence around any of the pins! I flowed solder around all the pins on the board last night. Problem per...

The P.O has provided me with additional information. The brake failure message appeared while driving home after having the brakes bled by his local mechanic. I’m not sure how that can lead to a fault like this.

In New Zealand you can get the 2008+ V70 with a 5cyl turbo. They come in as second hand imports from Japan. Very tempting, love the interior and exterior styling particularly around the rear. (Don’t read too much into that statement!)

I just went to a friend's house to look at his 2001 V70XC. He complained that it stalls when idling. I got one code off the computer, post cat fuel trim too rich. First, a little background. Late last year i did a stage zero tune-up on my 850R. The results were disappointing. Mpg got worse, and boost was abysmal. I'd say idler pulley. I can't see any runout in the cam pulleys. The noise is very similar to the one I had on a previous 850 and it was the idler. In fact after timing belt jobs on two of these engines, it's the only part I have ever found to be worn out upon removal.

Re: 96 850T broken axle boot tutorial?

You don't need to remove the whole axle from transmission to replace the rubber cv boot. You just need to remove cv joint. I replaced mine about 2 months ago without pulling the axle from transmission. Easy job after i managed to loose a big center 36mm nut, since the last time it was removed ...

Well that's the plan, get rid of the Nivomats. I was just wondering if the rear spring rate for a standard non-nivo R was different than garden variety sedans. I did the conversion on a nivo equipped turbo wagon a few years ago using springs out of a GLE wagon with Bilstein tourings. It was plush bu...

I picked up another cam sensor from the junkyard today. The car wasn't a turbo but a 2.5 N/A but hey, it's the same basic motor, right? Vibration under acceleration is more likely to be the inner joint. If you can't get the passenger side axle out of the trans, then I fear you will be stuck with the vibration.

I think a bad wastegate diaphragm is more likely to lead to boost spikes and/or overboost? Double check ALL turbo hoses, vac lines etc and their routing. When you say "stutter" do you mean the boost is fluctuating, or is the engine actually stuttering like a misfire or bad surge?

Oh, if it's the ones I'm thinking of, you insert one side of the T in the hole on the back of the rubber strip, and then you stretch the rubber to pop the other side of the T in. It's quite easy once you have a rhythm. Does that make sense? If not I'll try and get a picture of how I do it.

Wow! Hard luck. I hope you haven't bent anything but it looks like you are in for an interesting weekend or two.

That video is the reason I replace all the rolling parts at every timing belt change-no matter how 'good' they feel.

Re: '96 2.0L turbo low boost compared to '94?

The 2.0l T5 allegedly has the same power and torque as the 2.3, I don't remember at what rpm though! you should have nearly full boost by 2300-2500rpm, if not you may, as I do with the V70, have a Vacuum leak or BCS fault. I have found a proper boost/vacuum gauge to be very helpful in diagnosing the...

Are you talking about a 2.3 turbo? The 2.4's don't have boost gauges. By "halfway" do you mean in the centre of the gauge, or halfway into the white (boost) side? My 94 850 T5 (B5234T) boost gauge shows about 80% into the white when you give it some lolly. It feels about right too. Is your 2.0 label...

Agree with cn90 my last TB change on my (ex) 850 wagon, there was the faintest audible chirrup from the timing cover area when the engine was cold, no noise after a minute running. The idler bearing was so badly broken up inside, I could barely turn it by hand!

Hideous vibration after renewing engine mounts

I am gutted. I spent many hours doing work on my car the last few days including timing belt, PCV, hoses etc. I also replaced right hand engine mount (under the crank) and the rear hydraulic mount. The old mount looked fine, but I couldn't get the bolt through the upper torque bush when I replaced i...

Anyone seen a BCS like this?

I have boost issues, the turbo boosts off the clock with the wastegate line disconnected but only halfway with it connected.
It has a Denso Boost control solenoid and a non standard looking connector. Could this be part of the problem?

It all depends on who maintained the donor car. At 120,000miles it could be stuffed or it could have another 100,000 in it. If you love the car rebuild the turbo. If you're brave, do it yourself. There are one or two step by step tutorials on how to do it and a rebuild kit is about $55 from ebay.
