Unless it's in the emissions description, where in the VIN do you see automatic transmission? Are you checking VIDA or another official Volvo database, because as far as I know, the VIN doesn't differentiate that. Otherwise, we could ID these in ads or on websites without having to scour junkyards ...

Re: front fire? I thought this was just a head job after a brief overheat. Was there a fire? If so that opens other possibilities.

+1 on the MAF though, but if these cars will run (somewhat) with the MAF unplugged not sure that is what is holding up the works in this case.

Thought of another thing: what about the coolant temp sender? If the car overheated was that cooked as well?

Generally,ecu(s) are not interchangeable because of software differences. The car will run with it,but not properly.
