Need help with 1999 volvo s70

Post by volvo9899 »

Recently my volvo stalled out and thought it was just from frozen gas, turned out it wasn't. We changed the fuel filter checked the fuel pump and its fine. When u turn the key after the car sits the fuel pump kicks on the first time then there is a click under the hood and the intake hose area vibrated for about 5 minutes then when it clicks again and the vibration stops u can then turn the key and the fuel pump will work once more and then this cycle repeats. Does anyone have any clue what could be causing the fuel pump to quit working possibly due to this vibration?

Welcome to MVS,

From your observations the fuel pump sounds like it is working. Have you checked fuel presure at the Schrader valve at the end of the fuel rail?

Do you have a Check Engine Light on? Have you tried to scan for codes? Contrary to what the auto parts stores will tell you Volvo's will set codes even if the CEL isn't on..

The more information you can give us the better we can guess. Does your temperature gauge work normally? (pegged at the 3:00 position after a mile or so). It could be an electronic throttle module issue but I have no car that has such a beast.

Yes there is fuel pressure each time we have checked it and the i believe the temp is normal. Though we havent been able to scan for codes yet the sms light is the only one on. It seems it has something to do with whatever the part is that is connected to the hose that goes into the engine(thats where the strange vibration is coming from). It seems like whatever is causing that vibration is stopping the fuel pump from working. Ive attached a photo showing where i'm talking about. As soon as we unplug that part or wait the vibration stops and the fuel pump will work on startup once more.

Thanks for responding Lee

That's the idle control valve it looks like. Looks a LOT different than mine, but upon a closer look at your picture, that's what it is. It is supposed to make a buzzing noise with the key turned on, that's normal. But it shouldn't stop the fuel pump from running.

What kind of fuel pressure are you getting WHILE CRANKING?

Are your plugs sparking? Just pull out one...with the direct ignition you have that should be enough. Lay it on top of the engine and look for a spark while it's being cranked. If it doesn't fire, you may actually have a bad crank or cam position sensor.
