I agree its a E-bay item. I bought one but did not get the deal like the earlier post ($20). I think I paid close to $60.00. but I wanted it right now. If you take your time you can probably get it cheaper.
I know that the FOBs for the 96 and 97 are tons mor expensive than the earlier 850 models.

they usually advertise them as working on all model years. Is this not true? I've also seen posts from people having trouble getting them to re-program. Perhps that was the trouble. The one's I've seen on ebay look nothing like my '93 one. I just got a '96 850 and wonder if the extra for my '93 will work. When I find it  I'll report back if it works.

Well mine is grey with one button. Might be because it was shipped in from Sweden...one of those "special delivery" cars. I'll post a pic and update if it works with our new 850 next week.

I know that the earlier 850 fobs have two button side by side (horizontal). The 96 and 97 fobs also have two buttons but on top of the other (vertical).

I do not know if the earlier ones will work for the 96 and 97 models. I have not tried. I bought mine off ebay and It stated it was good for either the 96 or 97 models.

I would be nice to try if the older ones worked, save lots of money.

Programming an 850 Keyless remote is easy:
1. Get in your car and put your key in the ignition (all doors and windows, trunk must be closed).
2. Turn your key to position II and back off 5 times within 15 seconds...on the 5th time (last time) leave it in position II (don't turn on engine during any of this). On early model 850's the light on the dash won't light, but on later models the light on the dash will light up and stay lit (meaning it's ready for programming).
3. Within 10 seconds push either the lock or unlock button on your remote. It is important that you push only 1 (one) button, and only one button once.
4. If you have any other remotes you want to program, within 30 seconds, press the lock or unlock button on those remotes too (you can program up to 3 for one car).
5. turn key to off postition, remove it from the ignition (very important) and then get out of your car, shut your door and try your remote(s).

1998 (C/S/V/XC70's) model Keyless remotes take a PIN that your dealer has along with the Volvo Scan tool to program.

1999 and later C/S/V/XC/70's Take a VADIS download to program.

Hope all this info helps.

If you buy from eBay, et. al., make sure you get the exact same remote as you have for your car to begin with...the serial numbers and FCC numbers should all match.

Well I was going to post a pic of my '93 key fob, but I don't see how to attach a pic and I don't have a host to link to, so anyway it is grey with only one button. I tried to program it to the '96 850 I just got and it didn't work.

So that's one experiment down. I did just install new lighting in the '96 since the toggle switch had broken off and so I had no dome light. AND in my '93 I fixed the seat by putting in a new cable in the back to enable the seat back to recline and come back up. HA I can do these things with the help of the web. Now I just need to find a '96 key fob. Oh and fix my passenger side window on the '93. Ah well, for some reason we love these cars.[/img]
