C70 Convertible Steering Cracks on Hard Turns

Post by Cat »

My steering cracks when I turn hard and sqeaks when I hit bumps. The dealer told me that it is a design flaw where the car does not stay lubed. Even after their "heavy duty lube," it still cracks. I've taken the car to other mechanics who say they can't find the problem, but it's more than just lubrication. Do you know what else it can be? I feel that it may be a suspension problem.

Is it more of a clunk or a pop sound? If it's a popping sound, I would suspect upper strut mounts or sway bar links. If it's a clunking sound like when you go over bumps, it's probably busted spring seats.

If you find out what it is (and whether it's a serious problem) let me know. Mine is a 2004 C70 convertible and does exactly the same thing. The first couple of times it was really worrying, but I've been told (althoguh not by any Volvo people) that it's a problem with all front or rear steering cars (I'm not sure whether C70's are front or rear! As long as it gets me from A to B without breaking down, I'm happy!)
