smoke coming from under exhaust manifold
Thank you for the advice with my last problem. Now I have a new one. Today I was in a drivethru in my 95 volvo 850 turbo. And smelled a hot burning smell coming from infront of me and then saw smoke coming from under the hood. Once I stopped the car it continued to make the smell and smole but then stopped shortly thereafter. Oil changed 2k ago Mobil 1 full synth. Oil level checked no problem there I can not quite see where exactly it is coming from but it is coming up on the exhaust side of the motor hidden by the heat shroud towards the passanger side. If anyone has had any scenarios like this please write to me and let me know I really love this car and I depend on it every day. Any advice is appriciated. Thankyou

Let's shoot for easiest fix first: is it the oil cap or cap's gasket? They're known to harden and crumble, then oil gets out from under the cap.

I bet I know what the problem is. Look at the fresh air intake hose right before it attaches to the turbo. There is a PCV hose that connects there that also hooks in with a vacuum hose and an electrical connection. Check to make sure that the biggest hose has not become disconnected from the fresh air intake pipe. If it has, you'll get smoke coming from the exhaust side of the engine.
I've got a similar problem with my 850R at the moment.
Clouds of white smoke from the exhaust, and smoke from the exhaust/turbo joint. You can see oil on the joint, and I'm convinced that oil is coming into the exhaust from the turbo. The smoke is very white, not blue suggesting that it is not being burnt thru the induction system. A local independant volvo dealer recently replaced a vacuum hose on the car and it has only started since this. The car did not smoke at all before the replacement of this pipe. It is totally undriveable like this as it white-outs the road behind me.
Help!!!!!!

White indicates water vapor. Losing any coolant?keithn wrote:I've got a similar problem with my 850R at the moment.

none that I am aware of.
As I said before, you can see oil dripping from the exhaust/turbo manifold interface, suggesting that the smoke is being created after the combustion process.
