Burnt rubber smell on XC70 after using donut spare

Post by Daanderud »

I recently had a flat in my 2002 XC70 and had AAA put the donut spare on. After they left we noticed that the tire seemed a little flat so we pumped it up to 50 psi, as it said 60 psi MAX on the tire. I drove it to pep boys auto repair and as I was about a block away there was this very heavy smell of burnt rubber in the car. When I got out I smelled the same around the tire, which was warm, but also in the engine compartment. The regular tire is on now, I drove it home today and everything runs fine except on occassion I still smell the burnt rubber in and around the car. Do you thing this is an issue with the AWD? Is this because I didn't inflate to 60psi? Afterwards after reading the manual it says to 60 psi. What do you think is wrong.

Appreciate any feedback I can get. I can also be reached at [email protected]

Please post any comment on this to this thread, in addition to an email to Dennis please.

The first thing that I thought of when I read this is the AWD system: running a donut spare would send the planetary gear into constant different rotation for n number of miles. I'm not an expert on the AWD in any car, so this is only conjecture based on the problems with XC70s having one or two different size tires.

Dennis, could the smell have not been of rubber?

Thanks... Actually, we checked the donut spare and it was fine. Turns out that the Turbo Line is leaking and needs to be resealed, also a problem with the turbo booster pressure and a broken engine mount. Per Volvo Dealer.
