Mass Air Flow Sensor - 1999 S70 T5

Post by TheMerckx »

Hello Folks! I have a '99 S70 T5 (luv this puppy!). After several $$ trips to the dealership for several OBD-II codes, the dealership wants to charge me another $300 to replace the MAF sensor. I'd rather do it myself.

Where is the MAF Sensor on this car? I might try to clean this thing first.

I also want to invest in a decent shop manual with diagrams for future reference. Anyone got any info?

Thanks a million!

The MAF Sensor is right after the air box, you should see a wire connection to it from the computer. You can try cleaning it with some brake cleaner first. If it is still bad you can get one from Boston Volvo for $175, and is not very difficult to install.

Haynes repair manuals are very good and you can usually find them at your local autoparts store.

Yep! Thanks for the tip. Found the MAF sensor (physically connected to the upper left corner of the air/air filter box on my car with 2 torx bolts, if facing the car from front to rear). Waiting on my OBD II scantool to arrive this weekend. I'll attempt to clean the MAF sensor and clear the codes at the same time.

Thanks again.

How do you clean an MAF sensor?

Son of a gun. Didn't even have to replace the MAF sensor (what the dealer told me I had to do), although I did check the electrical connection on the MAF sensor, which seemed fine. Got my OBD-II scan tool, which pulled up a P1171 code. Erased the code with the scan tool, and haven't seen the Check Engine light since.

Best $100 I spent on this car. Now why couldn't the dealer check the MAF sensor connection and clear the code just like I did? $$$$$$.

How many miles have you gone without it on? Don't be too sure that it won't come back on.

Thanks for the jinx! As soon as you posted your comment, the light came back on! :?

I reset the code again, and the light returned the next day. Tried to blow a small amount of compressed air into the MAF to clean it out, but the light returned (and the car ran REALLY poorly that evening, after I erased the code again). SOOO, I attempted to remove the MAF sensor. The air box side came off easily, but the engine side was fused to this hard plastic hose that extended down into the engine (the bottom of the hose appeared to have a sensor in it as well. Certainly don't want to replace that). I would have to cut a slit in the end of the plastic tube to remove the MAF sensor. Or, if I have to cut the tubing, I may have to splice a new piece of tubing between the MAF and the plastic tube. Either way, I'm not sure what effect that would have on the sensor.

At this point, I think I'm gonna bail and let the dealer do it ('cuz I know their gonna have to deal with that hose). Unless someone suggests otherwise.

It should not be fused on. Is there not a big plastic clamp on yours like on mine? Anyway, it should come off...maybe pull hard? You can buy a new one from here for under $170...OEM volvo one at that...easy to replace...or at least it should be.
