Wrong timing belt 850. The conclusion
After taking my car apart a week ago to change the timing belt I found that the replacement belt I had bought was the wrong one. There are two timing belts for the T5, one has 148 teeth the other has 143 teeth,I also found out that the tensioner on my car was'nt a hydrolic one but a manual instead. And to add isult to injury the belt on my car had only got 142 teeth, after discussing this with numerous dealers and motor factors it was decided to try the 143 tooth version. This was a close fit but the tensioner would'nt tighten up sufficiently so the belt would go slack. The 148 tooth belt was way to long, so after talking to a friend of mine who works at the local motor factors he said he'd look in his listings to find me a belt. And he actualy found me a belt, yep he succeeded where all the volvo dealers had failed. It turns out my car had the tensioner from a V70 fitted and so the belt for a V70 or S40 with 142 teeth fitted perfectly. So if any of you find you've not got a hydrolic tensioner on an 850 and need to change the belt check the one you have first to see how many teeth it has before you pull the engine apart and leave yourself stranded.
