1998 S70 code stopped working

Post by sadpuppy »

I just want to tell you all what happened to me:

I bought my S70 from a Volvo dealership in 1998. I replaced the battery once a few years ago and the code that came with the car worked fine to restart the radio. I also got into a fender-bender a few years ago that required me to use the code again after the repairs were finished. Worked fine again.

Recently I had to replace the battery again. This time when I entered the code, I was suprised to see "EEEE" on the display. I figured I put it in wrong, so tried again, and again, and then it said "OFF" of course. Unable to believe this was happening and assuming the mistake must be mine, I tried again after waiting 2 hours for "CODE" to come back up, and promptly struck out again.

I can't believe this. I don't always take my car to a Volvo dealer since I don't live near one, and this latest time my new battery was installed I didn't either. All I know is, somehow the code got changed. Sigh. I'll try calling the dealership with my VIN number when I can, but somehow I'm not too optimistic my road trip this weekend will involve music. It's just so strange that this happened!

Again, the VIN does you no good. PULL the radio, on the top is the serial number.
Any (Volvo) parts dept worth their soul can get the code for it in 1 minute flat.
If THAT code doesn't work, don't know what to tell you

The VIN has nothing to so with it unless it's THE ORIGINAL RADIO
oterwise you have to go by the serial numbers.
I had one that took a couple of tries at the dealer. Apparanty there are a couple of way to find the right code so if the 1st code doesn't work, they have to get it another way, but IT CAN BE GOTTEN by a good parts person

Take a point, Pencil, pen, paperclip and push in the two tabs on the side of the radio.
They will pop out. You then pull the radio out, really very simple.
Write down ALL the numbers on the top as sometimes they need different ones to get the code.
(You have to change your handle). 8)
I had a friend many years ago that used "Superjew for everything.
He was an SCCA national champion and had that all over his T shirts and his car for years!
He was A production national champion (427 Cobra) for 3 years running in the mid 70's!

Yep, what they are telling you is correct. You need to press on the two tabs at the sides of the radio. They will pop out like handles and you can pull it partly out of the dash to see the serial# on top. Just go to a Volvo dealership with your ID and car registration. They will get you the code for that specific radio serial# FOR FREE. If not, go to another dealership.

I am trying to see if I can get around the 2 hour wait by pulling the radio fuse and then punching in the code. It probably won't work and I'd have to wait the two hours for the reset because the original code did not match the VIN# so I punched in the wrong code 3 times. The original radio was probably swapped out during warranty work years ago.

You are right. It didn't work. I used up 2 hours going to, picking up, and driving my date around until I was able to punch in the correct code. Boy,we were glad it was over because we were getting hungry!

Hi LIz, I have same problem like you,can you send me the code, because I think that code is the same for every radio in volvos 850,thank you in advance Branislav, you can send me a e-mail to this address [email protected]

Any Volvo dealership can get the code; they need your VIN number and the radio serial number. The radio itself pops out pretty easily and the serial number is right on top. Volvo of N. America won't release the code directly to the consumer; only to an authorized dealership. It's a four digit code.
I had the unfortunate experience of being told I had to buy a new radio "because there's no code for it". The dealership wanted me to spend $230.00 then and there. Fortunately, I ain't that dumb.
I drove to ANOTHER dealership who had the code in two minutes flat and at no charge.
Talk about music to your ears.
Keep that code in a safe place; I also ended up writing it on the radio itself. Nobody wants to steal this radio, believe me, and it is incredibly easy to just pop it out of the dash.
Beware of any dealer that gives you a BS line about no codes or recoding. They are trying to steal your $$$$.
