You've got some big problems, but let's start with basics. How's the transmission fluid level? Color? Smell?

I had/have a similar problem. Trans will "kick" in traffic when I press/let go of gas. Also will "kick" when shifting between gears...but only about 20% of the time. I had the fluid flushed. That didn't change anything. The dealer found a broken motor mount (lower pass. side I think) and said that could be what is causing the problem. The part just came in yesterday and I'm dropping the car off tomorrow for the repair. I will let you know if this fixes the problem.

Car is currently in shop and there is a problem within the transmission. I was told a possible pressure problem which has created slipping between gears and hard shifts. The fluid is burnt, and the transmission is being pulled and opened to see what the problem is. I'm a little worried about my entire car being torn apart, but I will post with final results.

That's too bad your Volvo needs that kind of work. I don't wish serious car problems on my worst enemies.
Good luck with the results, and please keep us informed as to how everything with it goes.
Thanks!

Well, I got the car back and it needed a complete trans overhaul. Internal electronic parts were replaced, a new forward drum (whatever that is) and torque converter. A nice $1800 bill, but I am extremely glad it was all covered so I didn't have to pay a cent. The driveline is extremely smooth now and shifts are crisp and power is smooth - feels good. BUT, sometimes the shifts are very sensative at lower speeds - meaning it feels like the car is between second and third gear all the time when I press on the gas lightly. I am starting to think it has something to do with the electronic throttle?? Maybe the switch in the pedal it worn out?? Any ideas?
