Has your temp gauge returned to normal with the new thermostat? If it is not it could be the ECT (engine temp sensor) is also bad or at least the connector which is mounted on the back of the power steering pump and the sensor screws into the bottom of the thermostat housing. Check he connector contacts are clean and the wires are all connected. The connector is known to go brittle with age. If the temp gauge is not reading correctly time the change the ECT. Recommend only Volvo part. There may be an aftermarket brand that works but don't know what brand it is.

Temp gauge has returned to normal, I get more heat and I'm not burning black any more.

Woo-hoo!

Problem apparently solved.
