30 minures later I persuaded it to come off.
Btw., first I was worried that the cover could rub on the belt if mounted with one bolt only, but turns out there is that notch under the pulley (which makes removal of the belt so much fun) which probably would prevent that from happening.
I hate sloppy solutions like that, but at least it´s off and I can continue with life.

Glad you got it taken care of! If you really wanted to, you could remove the remains of that bolt and replace it, but I don't think it will hurt anything to hold that shield on with one screw.

I ordered a new bolt from Volvo (takes 10 days because it is a classic part) just to be on the safe side. In case that rustbucket of an 850 makes it to another TB change I'd rather open the remaining bolt than dremel it off.

Actually one of those bolts is a bit more important than meets the eye. One of them, I can't remember if it is the top or the bottom but I am leaning toward the bottom one, has a longish pin that extends up to the belt path as a safety measure to keep the belt on the pulley. While it is not absolutely imperative it is a safety measure and I'm not sure how easily you can get the belt threaded on and off if it remains in place.

As above the end of the 10mm bolt is very close to the belt and prevents it from skipping teeth.
If access to the old bolt thread is an issue you can remove the oil pump. Of course you'll need to deal with that 30mm nut and serpentine pulley first, of course. My prayers in your direction

That's actually a pretty smart idea on Volvo's part. I never thought much of that shield beyond it being, well, a shield.precopster wrote: ↑13 Aug 2018, 19:27 As above the end of the 10mm bolt is very close to the belt and prevents it from skipping teeth.

I might have to refit mine - I never refitted after the last TB change, missed it and was too lazy to go back to fit.

Well, I took off the belt and tried fitting on the old belt the other day, and it seems that it works, but it is very tight. That second bold must be the reason why...
Kinda impossible to get on without twisting the belt, but I guess i'll have to live with that. I'll just make sure to clean all the oil off of everything around the crank pulley before squeezing the new belt in there.

Foto proof: i had the old belt off and on twice. With the bolt in place.
btw, I doubt these bolts are meant to prevent jumping because they are off center that far.
