Hi folks,
I just found this site today, and apologize for my lack of manners by jumping in fast with a question.
I have a '98 V70 (140,000 miles) that is leaking oil like the pipelines in Iraq. It's so bad it blows around and coats my rear window. The problem seems to be from the rear of the engine between the engine and turbo unit (I'm guessing at this, but it seems accurate). The oil lines going to the turbo are not loose. I think it's the rear engine seal.
I'm pretty good wrenching on things, but would appreciate any words of wisdom the forum has to offer.
Has anyone else had a similar condition? The fix involves engine removal. What is the best service manual for this task? I've used Haynes and find them acceptable. Are there any special tricks to avoid knuckle damage or excessive cussing? I remember a trick used on pulling the engine from a Saab 900 (Brace the front springs to keep them from relaxing, by inserting a wedge. That trick helped during reassembly.)
Anyway, I appreciate good advice and am looking forward to hearing some. Thanks.

I had the rear engine seal replaced when my transmission was replaced. From info I had picked up on this and other boards the seal is not that much of a chore to replace it - just a chore to get to it.
While you have it apart you may want to check out your transmission...
Good luck,
T

Clean off the entire underneath of the engine with a towel, then start her up for a second. Then get back under there and see if you can tell where the leak's coming from.
If you're lucky, it is the turbo's oil return line, and that's an easy fix. Mine was leaking just a touch every night, but enough to make me concerned. It took a few weeks of watching the underside of the car to see where it came from. That area -- oil seems to escape from one area but look like it's coming from another, or everywhere.
The line will not be loose if leaking, at least mine wasn't. It's a gasket on the line where it meets the turbo.

Thanks for the advice. I've heard the same on other forums and will definitely inspect one more time before pulling the engine.
