I had a kid try to steal a "small" dump truck back when I lived down south. Apparently the idea of driving stick got him, and then the fact it had 4WD got him again with the stick for that.
We caught the little bugger on camera, but this was the 90's and he looked like a snowflake or cotton ball. Showed up on the property about 2 months or so later looking for a job. I'm a tad evil...
Asked him if he could drive stick.. Said yes.. Pointed to the truck and asked about that one.. His eyes got wide. I mentioned we could provide training. I then mentioned that had he got the job first he may have been successful in the theft. The owners decided not to press charges and asked what I thought. I mentioned that anyone with the brass ones to attempt a theft and then come back for a job is quite dedicated...
I ended up hiring him to move vehicles around the yard. No attempted thefts occurred again. There's an old expression... Young, dumb and full of... Yeah, you got it. He actually wasn't a bad guy, but sometimes young people do stupid crap just for kicks. That obviously doesn't excuse it.

I worked for a family welding shop years ago. The town had a big 4th of July celebration with parade and fireworks. On the work day after the 4th of July, the company 1 ton truck and fifth wheel trailer were missing. The keys had been left in the truck and the gates were left open. The sheriff was called and the truck reported. By afternoon the truck and trailer were found without damage in a rural roadside about 20 miles away.
Keys were removed and gates locked in the future.
