Post by abscate »

Evita is being finicky this week

Picked up pizza on Wednesday, SWMBO used car for dentist appointment Thursday , car sat until Saturday

Temp dropped to 2f

Saturday morning, click no crank
Put battery on charger 12.7 volts measured
Click is solenoid pulling in, no motor turning action at all
Relatively new starter.
Tried jumping at remote terminal, no change
Removed starter, replaced with rebuilt, no change
Checked voltage drop on new positive cable, none found
Jumped ground cable with jumper cables from B- to frame, no change

Options left

Defective battery not delivering current
Seized engine

Engine turns free with 30 mm wrench on crank pulley

B+ falls from 12.4 to 11.7 on cranking

Leaning to a poor current performing battery

Huh, that's really weird. Battery might be done for... have you put a jump pack on it while trying to crank?

I wrote a while back about the issues with my 'R'. When charged the battery would show around 12.5V but if left even a few days would start but throw lots of codes and run rough. The 'bastards' seem to be way more sensitive to battery condition, particularly when cold weather is here. I could at least open the cells on that battery and found one of the cells was weak and cold weather killed it enough to make it an issue. New battery fixed it.

Same issue again this year. Car had sat for months and I charged the battery (only a year old Interstate 730CCA). This is the one I thought I damaged either it or the car when the ground cable and red cable decided to both swing inward at the same time as I struggled with the battery in the dark. Large spark and when I started the car it ran ok until I switched the lights on and then all hell broke loose with random warning lights and rough running. Eventually ran the car around to the garage in daytime. Re-charged battery again on trickle charger. Started car and no issues? Had battery re-checked as my battery tester said CCA was weak. Took to supplier and they tested it with their fancy tester after charging it for 30 minutes. They showed me them test it and it showed full CCA? Still not sure that testing it immediately after charging is a good test. I find if you test after the battery has been 'rested' for a couple of hours gives a much more honest condition.

Can you swap in a battery from another car that is known to be good?

Switch out the suspect battery with another from your front row fleet. Is the suspect battery one of your 'it will last another year oldies'?

I hate cold weather.

Resolved with new battery positive cable

More to come.

Tricky one to diagnose. Battery voltage within 0.1V between B=terminal and starter lug connection

But, when cranking, voltage dropped to 2.7V

Replaced with generic battery cable, problem solved

Defective cable was one year old OEM , not Volvo, from FCP

Wow, that’s a quick failure! Glad you got that figured out. Battery cable issues can get very annoying... as I’ve experienced.

That is really disappointing in an 'OEM' part. Makes you wonder then what is the current (no electrical pun intended) quality of OE Volvo parts. In the way distant past I knew Volvo OE parts were to a better quality than the OEM parts. It did not mean the OEM parts were not any good but the OE parts were made to a higher tolerance. Today I am no longer convinced Volvo OE parts are always any better than aftermarket or OEM parts. Just you pay more for them. Good example is dumping the OE rotors and pads on our 06 XC70 after 3 sets of bad OE rotors in 10,000 miles + a re-grind. Changed to Akebono pads and Brembo rotors and now been good for 10,000km so far.

Well done for figuring that out as I probably would not have thought to check such a new parts. Clearly you are made of better stuff!!

Hope you are not currently buried under snow.

Neil.

$90 vs $60 for the one year lifetime one, and 3 hours of hell in 20F troubleshooting amd replacing
