Resetting service light

Post by Guest »

I cannot reset the "service light" on my wife's 1998 V70 AWD. I have tried all of the procedures that I found reading this forum but nothing worked. A friend of mine thinks the 1998 Volvo's service light can only be cleared using a special OBD-II scan tool. Is that correct? My generic OBD-II scanner doesn't do. My local Volvo dealer wants $90 to do this. I think that is outrageous. Am I off base thinking the dealer's policy is to punish customers that have their car serviced someplace else? Is this even legal?

Yea, you need the special OBDII tool.

Call the service dept. specifically or stop by and plead innocence and ask wouldn't they reset it just this one time. Ravenna Volvo (well the service reps anyway) reset my light for free when I went in to "shoot the sh!t."

Or try a local auto parts store -- sometimes they have the tool and will do it for free or low cost ($20).

If you live in an area that has emission testing that utilizes the OBDII connection; you can get the tech at the testing station to reset you service light for a $10 tip...
