Good morning,
I'd like to hear your 2cts on a supposed transmission noise.
Driving off in 1st gear causes a rattling noise that intensifies going uphill or accelerating.
It stops when the clutch is engaged, comes back when disengaged. It is audible from inside and outside of the vehicle.
Sometimes the noise extends into 2nd gear.
Few things in addition:
Clutch is worn. Does not slip but engages pretty late
Also when backing the car into a parking spot applying brakes and shutting off the engine and then stepping off clutch I hear a clunk. Probably play in the clutch fork.
Any ideas?

It sounds like release bearing noise based on the occurrence pattern

I might have used the term "engaged/disengaged" in an unclear manner.
I would point to the clutch thrust bearing as well if the noise occurred when the clutch is pressed.
Noise is there while clutch pedal is released.

Could this noise have its cause in a damaged DMF?
How can I check if my vehicle has a dual mass flywheel?

Sounds like rollover rattle. Common and normal with a single mass flywheel, uncommon with dual mass. If it is dual mass, the two pieces may have seized together, which I have seen before. No real cause for concern.
If your transmission is external slave, it’s single mass. If internal slave, it’s almost always (but not 100% of the time) a dual mass car.
I’d change the fluid anyway if it hadn’t been done recently, as you can learn a lot about the condition of the internals (bearings, synchros, etc) from how the fluid looks

Clutch slave cylinder is external.
Thank you for your answer mate!

"Clutch is worn. Does not slip but engages pretty late"
I had a new 1999 C70 HT Manual. When i picked it up at the dealer the owner told me the clutch on these engages at the top and quickly after that. He was right. Fast forward I recently bought a 1998 s70 T5 manual with 157k miles and it engages at the top with no slippage.
Btw, my clutch release bearing is going out. Rattles like a diesel when not engaged, quiet when pushed.
