1998 V70R timing belt

What is the interval for the timing belt on a 1998 V70R? Just purchased one and the belt was done about 60,000 miles ago in 2016. Owner said his Volvo tech recommended 10 years/100,000 miles. I thought these were 7 year/70,000 miles. I have searched multiple forums and cannot find anything definitive. Thanks!

I believe you are correct. 7 year/70k for the '98. I don't think they changed to 100k until '99.
But others will verify....

There is an engine number break in 1998 when they went to the mechanical TB tensioner which has a 105k mile replacement interval. The engine number break is

Drum rolll...

. Engine break is at 1266196

The engine number is on a sticker on the cover, or under some grime stenciled into the block, near the water pipe at the rear.

Awesome. Thank you. Now, if it doesn’t fall into that serial number, but has a mechanical tensioner, instead of the hydraulic, do I still follow 7/70 or 10/105? Thanks

I believe the interval is set by the type of tensioning. I don’t have Volvo documentation to that effect.

The serial number is the change from hydraulic to mechanical tensioner.

Thst might be a question for the s-ages

Ok. My son just bought a V70R. It’s the early engine with hydraulic tensioner. Belt kit has been ordered. It has about 60k miles on it but it’s 9 years old. The Volvo owners manual only mentions 70k interval for replacement, nothing about time. The belt condition looks ok. He going to drive it to me (90 miles) and we’re going to replace it. Thanks again.

It will be fine. It’s nominal 70k/7 years but there is ample safety margin built in. Give it a quick look over for cracks and oil. And put it in the 3 month to do list.

Build date 6/1998. Very late 1998 model...woo hoo..that probably means mechanical tensioner

Engine serial 1237154. Pulled the cover. Belt is showing normal signs of wear. No cracking, rot, or oil. Ordered the kit already
