Charging issue

Post by Sveedy »

The '99 V70 decided not to start yesterday. Turned the key, it tried, and then nothing but dash lights. I checked the voltage and it was only at apx 11v. I put the charger on it and a hour later it started. Let it charge for a few hours and it was at 12.4v.
This morning it was still at 12.4. Started again, took it for a short drive, and checked it while running and it was only at 12.2v. Shut it off and it went up to 12.3v. So I'm thinking that I have a issue with the alternator, not a parasitic draw.

My question is whether this year of alternator has the replaceable internal regulator, or am I stuck replacing the whole alternator. I seem to remember reading about the regulator being the most likely culprit.

It should have whether you have a 100A or 120A alternator.

Item #3 on Volvo parts list:

120A regulator:

Some websites seem to claim they both use the same regulator 100A or 120A. I think that NY98 still had 100A alternators and 99- the 120A.
As you probably know, the rating is normally on a label on the visible topside of a Volvo alternator.

Before buying any parts- check your voltage at alternator. 1 wire to the alternator case, another to positive cable at the alternator(may use alligator jaw connector). You need to first make sure you dont have bad ground or positive cable

Yep, it's a 120 amp. And yep, the grounds and cable are all good.
It looks like a pretty easy swap.

Thanks guys !
