Re: buying advice sought,
Interesting thread! I’ve always liked the idea of picking up an older 850 as a project car — they’ve got that solid Volvo feel and still look great for their age. The key really is finding one that’s been looked after, because once the seals and electrical stuff start acting up, it can turn into a real money pit. If you can find a clean 5-speed and handle some DIY repairs, it’s honestly a rewarding ride.

I keep thinking about the same idea. On the weekend a 96 850 T5 wagon came up for sale for $1000, but it was over 300km away. Not surprisingly, I never got a reply from the seller as it sold quickly. I just asked if it was drivable as it had a trans leak.
Then there was a base 10V 96 850 for sale locally. It was also a wagon in the platinum grey I like. Again needed work but started at $2000 CDN, and since has dropped to $1200. One of my Volvo owning friends is maybe going to go look at it. It deserves to be saved, even as a 10V motor car. I just can't bring myself to put the effort into a car I don't really want. A 97 GLT (LPT turbo) or a turbo wagon would be a different case. But here owners seem to think a running car, even a sedan is worth $5000 + with issues. Nope.
Neil.

Ancient thread revival! Even in the afterlife, Jim speaks loudly!
I’ve scored four decent runners off the auctions for $500-1000 type money, none needing major stuff.
