Had a couple of hours today but didn't get as far as I would have liked. I got all the carpet in, front seats and mats but still have the back seats to do and the dynamat in the hatch. sneaking closer but always just out of reach

Rob, do you need the lower half of the steering wheel plastic? I might have it in the parts shed

Thank you but I do not. I am going to have to buy a new tumbler for this thing, the key will free spin in there sometimes. I was hoping to be able to repair this one but have been unsuccessful so far so I guess I will need a new one.

The spinning tumbler issue I had with my 2000 R as well not long after I bought it. It is still working fine 13 years later! It was caused by a sticky set of tumblers and a worn key. When the tumblers do not engage the ignition just spins to prevent the old screwdriver attempt. The 2nd issue is really worn keys not making full contact to push the tumbler blades out enough.

I don't like using WD-40 on key barrels but in this case you could try it to see if it will clean years of crud build up. Use the key to keep working the barrel. If this works, then try to find some dry graphite powder. I think you can now get sprays with it in and spray the barrel with that. If the key profiles are really worn, yo may have to replace them but that is a pain as they need programming.

Good Luck!

If you do need a new tumbler I have one with 2 keys in my basement I would be willing to sell for cheap. It came out of a 2000 V70 XC SE. I'm not sure if there are changes in model years or trim that would make it I incompatible though, would be worth checking. I bought the nice wood grain steering wheel out of the car over the phone and they ended up shipping me the entire column assembly, lol.

You would need new keys cut sue to the security ships not being for your car. You can use the ignition barrel, but would have to have 2 new keys cut to that barrel and then coded to your immobilizer. You then would have 2 keys for the car as it would not work with the driver's door, tailgate/trunk lock or glove box.

But you can use a second, different key and then put your original key in contact with an antenna ring under the dash permanently. I’ve got asecond antenna ring you can have but so does your parts car.

You will have a latent pending code for “ key in too long” but that doesn’t hurt anything

A shiny new tumbler from the dealer is about $400-500 but still available

That’s a really nice looking “ field car”

That is what they did on my R when I had a remote start and anti theft fitted to get around the antenna issue. However, I do still have the original key, so that may be why I do not get the message.
