Restoring volvo badges

Post by DennisCA »

I repainted my tailgate recently and it's sporting a shaved look right now. I want the emblems back however so people know I'm driving a Volvo and not a Ferrari.

Unfortunately, new emblems cost quite a lot, like 60 euros for a VOLVO emblem. I'm not keen on spending that kind of money on emblems. I got the originals left and I have been thinking about different ways to spruce up them up.

Method 1 is to spray them with rubber paint, it's easy to remove if it doesn't look good so I'm trying it first:

They actually turned out pretty nice, love the texture. The problem with this solution is that it doesn't last. The paint will peel off again and isn't very durable, you can just rub it off with your fingers. So this isn't what I am going with, but I think the look of the thing was worth showing.

I think if you have a car with a light color this could be very nice looking, but I wouldn't use rubber paint, I'd use something like bumper paint, I know there's one with a similar look. Then I'd also give it a coat of 2k clear (matte clear) to protect it. I am not sure if you could use that in conjunction with the rubber paint however, the clear and rubber might just both peel off together.

I tried silver metallic paint, just making it all silver. I do like the look even without the black edging. Some dirt got on the Volvo emblem so I was gonna sand it down and repaint but an interesting effect occurred...

I tried it against the cars paint, too bad it's pitch dark out right now. Daylight is getting too sparse around this time of year.

Looks real cool with the volvo factory colors inverted. That's definitely not a common look. Would look better if sanded to a higher grit and perhaps polished, or clear coated.

However I think the all silver look is the way to go against this color. I'll give it another look once some daylight arrives, but leaning all silver right now.

You can wrap them with chrome foil and carefully cut the edges to make them look like originals.
I did that with mine few years ago.
The foil will last for 3-4 years.

I'd like something that lasts on par with the originals, that's why I'm thinking of spray paint and 2k clear. Now I tried the same inverse effect on the others and in daylight I am kinda digging this look.

They're wet here so looking blacker and shinier, I like that look. I think I am going to go ahead with this, but sand to 800-1000 grit and then clear it for a gloss look.

I clear coated the badges last night, used 2k clear and I painted it on with a brush in order to get a thick layer of it. It smoothed out real nice, no brush marks at all.
