replacing the antenna 2000 c70 convertible

Post by c70usa »

Morning,

I have my replacement mast and it looks the same length as the broken one. I don't believe any of it is left in the motor. So, I'm stuck at step 1. I can't remove the nut/bushing. All's I've managed to do is scrap the paint off of it :( The nut turns and turns and turns but doesn't seem to be coming off. I am turning it counter clockwise. I'm very frustrated and need help!

Thanks

On the convertibles you can't change just the mast. You MUST change the whole thing. We stock the entire assembly. Part number is 8618361. Sorry it to so long to respond.

Hmmmm. Not sure why you say that. I did replace just the mast. Once I got past removing the nut it just took a few tries to suck it in. The old mast did not break off inside the motor so I got lucky there.

Replace the mast yourself!

I would like to know the part number that you used. There is no part number for a mast only on all c70 convertibles up to 04. Only the entire assembly is offered. I'm going by the catalog, and the many many I have sold for the convertible.

If you had a c70 coupe you can change the mast only. You may have installed a mast that is not designed for your car and got it to work. If that is the case, nice job. I would like to know the part number if you have it.

So I called a couple shops in the area and asked if they had changed the mast only on covertibles. Most shops said you can't do that the whole assembly has to be changed. Some of the older shops (who of course specialize in Volvo) had been able to use a regular mast and get it to work. They said it was a little bit of a pain to install, but you can make it work with some patience. It was mentioned that it may not last as long as the original, but I can't really see how that would happen.

This is the first I have heard of people doing this. I'm glad you took matters into your own hands and tried yourself. In the future I can now tell people it is possible. According to Volvo it is not.

(From IPD's website)
Power Antenna Mast
Specs: Mast is not available separately from Dealer
Part#: 8618361M
Brand: APA
Fitment: Fits all C70 models 1998-2004

Yeah that is aftermarket for sure, wonder why Volvo would not offer it as a replacement part.
