Issue with Odometer and Flashing Service Light

Post by wackenhut »

I have a 95 Volvo 850. I noticed the other day when I was driving from getting gas to my storage unit which is about 6 miles away, that my Odometer, calculated about 17 miles. I have had an issue in the past where the odometer stopped working all together on another 850, but this is causing more miles to accumulate. When the trip odometer gets to about "7", this is when the odometer changes and adds a mile. In addition, the Service Light continues to blink. I tried resetting it based on using the wire in pin 7, but this did not work. Not sure if both are related. One other item to mention, the codes coming up in pin 7 are the following: 1-3-2, 1-1-3, 1-2-2

I was reading about the small plastic gears inside the odometer but I do not think this is the case in my situation.

Looking at past forum topics there was the following:

First we need to enter Diagnostic Test Mode 5 (data readout)

Key on

Put the fly wire into A7,

Push button five times, briefly but firmly. DTM5 should now be ready for use. When the LED comes on and stays on, the system is ready for entering codes. We need to enter 1-2-4 for speedometer type in this manor:

Enter first digit while LED is still on.
Wait for LED to go out and then come on again before entering second digit
Enter second digit while LED is on.
Wait for LED to go out, then come on again. Now enter third digit.
Read off and note down the response code. It will most likely be 1-1-1 or 1-1-2 if your in KM's

Now we need to enter DTM6 (data entry) and we only have 30 seconds from the end of the DTM5 readout to start.

Press button 6 times within 30 seconds to access DTM 6 .
Now enter the new code 1-1-4 for US market in the same manor as you entered the prevoius code.

The LED will now repeat the codes you entered to let you check that you got them right.

When the LED comes on and stays on, confirm the entry by pressing the button and holding it down for more than 5 seconds .
Release button. LED will go out, and your done atlast.

just so you know, timing is critical, so if you get lost, just Key Off and start over.

How would you enter 1-2-4?
I tried doing it, but it came back blinking 1-6 if this means anything.

If anyone can help, that would be great.

Thank you.

Don't know about the speedo issue, but the other codes are:

1-3-2 - Low battery voltage. Check the battery, cables and charging.

1-2-2 - Air temp sensor not working or reading/giving temp data

1-1-3 - Possibly an O2 sensor issue. However, if the air temp is not reading correctly the engine guesses at the info which could make it run lean or rich which would affect the O2 sensor readings.

Not sure why the speedo is running fast. These units don't like it when someone try to reset the trip meter when the car is moving. Perhaps someone did that and has damaged the gears or mechanism causing it to run fast?
