Issue with Odometer and Flashing Service Light

Post by wackenhut »

I have a 95 Volvo 850. I noticed the other day when I was driving from getting gas to my storage unit which is about 6 miles away, that my Odometer, calculated about 17 miles. I have had an issue in the past where the odometer stopped working all together on another 850, but this is causing more miles to accumulate. When the trip odometer gets to about "7", this is when the odometer changes and adds a mile. In addition, the Service Light continues to blink. I tried resetting it based on using the wire in pin 7, but this did not work. Not sure if both are related. One other item to mention, the codes coming up in pin 7 are the following: 1-3-2, 1-1-3, 1-2-2

I was reading about the small plastic gears inside the odometer but I do not think this is the case in my situation.

Could be damage to the gears for the odometer or some dirt got in there somehow. Or, just got sticky. The issue with these is usually someone resets the tripmeter when the car is moving. DON'T DO THAT folks! It jams the tripmeter which in turn is connected to the odometer and cracks or breaks teeth.

I think whichever way you go, the cluster will have to come out to investigate further. 2 choices, pull the cluster, disassemble and find what is wrong. If the teeth are damaged then order the replacements (not cheap anymore) and car stays off the road until they arrive and you can replace them.

or

Pay up for new gears in advance and minimize downtime. Danger is you end up with gears you don't need.

Good Luck!

Forgot about the codes! :

1) Code 1-3-2 - Engine RPM signal absent. Here is a thread link on the issue:

viewtopic.php?t=13114

2) Code 1-1-3 - From 1994 and later, Heated oxygen sensor – maximum enrichment sensed short term fuel mixture too weak

3) Code 1-2-2 - ECT fault. Can cause hard starts.

Without knowing the car I don't know if these are current or old issues. It could be a crank sensor or cam sensor issue for the first issue which may cause the other 2 to code. Or the ECT is bad/failing.
