ABS rear sensors - anyone got a spare? - 97 850 AWD + 98 V70 AWD/V70XC

Post by scot850 »

Mu mechanic buddy who just loves his 850 AWD manual, has found it has developed an ABS issue. The issue points to the rear RHS sensor is bad. Bad enough, but I cannot find one anywhere, even in aftermarket form. Part number is : Volvo # 9442043

It is fitted to the 97/98 AWD cars. Anyone perhaps got a spare they don't need sitting around, even a used one? Up here you now seldom get 98 cars in the junkyards, especially 97/8 AWD's. Even when you do, the ABS sensors which are in a little aluminum can have fused to the steel knuckle.

Appreciate any help.

I did some more research and went to ATE's website. Looking through there I found their part listing and strangely it had a different part number for this car? The part number they have is:

9162612 (sup: 9128442) Bosch has 2 numbers : 360195 and 24.0741-1105.1

Strange thing is that this number is listed as fitting FWD and AWD P80's of all years? However, some sites show it not fitting 850's some not AWD. At least these part numbers have some traction and availability out there both as Volvo and ATE branded parts.

Ooof. A 27 year oldAluminum can in steel, not good. In 1999 they switched to plastic cases which ended that debacle.

I'm in a similar situation with my AWD wagon. The abs & tracks lamps are on and the scan tool says its the sensors in the back.

Which part number did you decide to go with and does anyone know what the difference between the 2 connectors are?

Ate catalogue says both types are ok for AWD models but when I search through auto doc (or similar) and filter for 850 AWD it says only the metal type is suitable 😅

For the older car, I believe the difference is that the holes in the knuckles are larger than for the later plastic ones. I send my buddy some links for various places listing the part numbers I have above after searching under them all.

Yes Abscate, 28 years, and Calgary winter with road salt and now liquid death de-icing solution.

Hello Neil,

Did you get any feedback from your buddy on which part number does the trick for the rear abs sensor for the 850 AWD?

Thanks in advance

Sorry no I have not. He has got so many project cars, and this one keeps driving so it has dropped down the priority list.

Ok thanks.

I have found one sensor that looks identical to discontinued sensor but it's listed as being for the front rather than the rear.

Volvo part 294816, it's for a later model but the fit looks similar and if I can track down an harness then maybe.....

Is the sensor so smart that it can tell weather it's in the back or front?

No, it can’t. As long as it sits close to the reluctor teeth it should work.
