I posted before about an intermittent speedo - finally tackled it today. I was on the fence about just ordering one off of Ebay as someone suggested (so I could have it there to switch out, instead of letting the car sit while it was shipped) but I took the plunge and thought I'd take a look and see if some wire/circuit was loose, etc.

Well the dash removal was not too bad - looked like it had been done before as some of the torx sockets were stripped.

After I got the speedo out it appeared that the back of it was burnt/scarred over a couple of the circuit channels so I jumped a few of the connections with some wire.

Then I re-heated most of the solder connections on the speedo and the bigger back piece and put it all together.

So far, no intermittent speedo - works fine.

I did get the SRS code after re-starting but a great mech I called told me how to get into the a/b diagnostics plug and insert the wire, clear the codes, etc. Great knowledge. I also did not have the radio code but he told me to call a dealer - well I called one out west (phone # off 'google') because it was 6 PM here already in FL and got the radio code.

Voila! All done. I noticed the tweeters in the upper panel are rotted tho as I suspected, so now I need to find some replacement ones - anyone have any ideas? Good ol' radio shack does not do individual cones like they used to! I have a good mail order radio parts source (partsexpress.com) but I thought I'd check around Wal-Mart, etc and see if I can find something that'll work. It's just not that valuable of a car.

Anyway anyone have any questions about pulling the dash apart, feel free to ask.

Next project is the axles, (bad boots/joints) then I'm going to find a satellite receiver and find a way to hook it into the head unit (anyone??)

See ya.

Great work on the speedo and dash... and codes for that matter. For speaker sizes, search on potroast's posts for good stereo information. I remember him throwing down some good ideas on speakers and amps. Head units too.

Search is always in the top area of this forum, right under the ad, or click here.

You'll probably need (I think that Euro models are the same as North American in this respect) an OBDII tool to reset any code on a '99.

The last of the models with the port system under the hood -- like Smash's -- were made in '95 or '96.

The change was in early '95 to OBD II

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).
