"shift" gear knob removal
How do you remove the gear knob for a 1993 volvo 850 automatic? My current knob is worn out and I wanted to replace it. Thanks for any help

Twist the leather boot 1/4 turn and push it down, then Just grab the knob with both hands and pull straight up. It might take some effort but thats how its done.

Do I turn the actual knob or the entire mechanism? I tried to turn the knob without any success. I wasn't sure if the knob just pulled off of the square shaft or if I have to remove the entire shaft with the knob? Thanks again for your help.

I tried that whole pulling up thing and had no success with it (maybe I'm just a weakling
). I resorted to the almighty dremel. Cut from the base of the knob (starting at the plastic part) and cut upward. Oh, and don't cut for too long at once or the rubber will melt. Eventually, you can get it to the point that it can be worked off.

Don't try and twist the knob its virtually impossible. What I meant was There is a small plastic square piece that holds the Boot onto the knob....TWIST that small ring just to get the BOOT off the Knob.
Now....if youre having trouble pulling the knob do this. Stradle you console, put the car in Drive, 3, or L. Grab knob with both hands and
PULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!
If the knob has never been off then it will require some effort.
1 very important thing though (if you are female then you don't have to worry about this) DONT HIT YOURSELF IN THE NADS!!!
Cause when it comes off, it really COMES OFF if you have to put that much effort into it. But it will come off and thats the only way other than the way WHITE850TURBO did his....Brutal! But effective!

Yup just remove the leather thingy from the base and pull like your life depends on it.
Quite a lot of volvo mechanics cannot do it. The mechanics I know always send their car to certain "knob pullers" they know who can do the job. You need a real he-men with martial arts training for this job.
I cannot manage to pull it out too.

I got a burlwood shift knob that came out of a T5-R on eBay for super cheap. Only $11 ! I got lucky though. A new one from the dealer will run you about $150!Smash2 wrote:Hey I want a new knob also - please let me know where you order yours from - or order it for me - anything. Mine is cracked also.
