v70 Engine Swap
v70 Engine Swap
I have a 98 v70 base. Engine is going south in it. I have a chance to get a 2000 s70 GLT SE. Would it be possible to swap the motors?

The block is essentially exactly the same, except that the 2000 has VVT, a different engine controller, and the cam design is a bit different. You can drill holes on the end and/or swap heads to place the distributor rotor.
Switch out all the sensors from your old engine to the 2000, and you will solve your wiring problems. And lastly, remove the VVT solenoid.

Let me rephrase; I would like to swap the motor and tranny from the the 2000 s70 GLT SE (donor car) and place it the 98 v70. I figured the controllers would be differant but it would just be puting back the old sensors?

Oh, hold on a second. I didn't see that the S70 was a GLT; just saw the SE. My fault
No, it won't be easily do-able, since the 2000 has a turbo. The wiring (and oil/cooling plumbing) there is different any way that you look at it, and it will require a lot of extra work to get that motor to work in a base V70, as well as an ECU upgrade. The transmission also wouldn't work, since it is controlled by the ETM and computer in the 2000 model.

Cool, thats what i wanted to know. I really like the wagon but am having all kinds of issues. Vibrations and rattles. Tranny seems to be driving like a dump truck also. Passanger motor mount and torque mount (top) are new. Believe the CAT is going, rattle noise from it. Motor seem to accelerate fine but feel like your not moving (tranny issue?). was looking to upgrade and solve all in one lol.

Worse, the '98 SEs had a B5254FS engine, the '99 and '00 SEs have a B5244S (the GLTs have a B5244T). See the "25" or "24"? That's the displacement. The '98 SEs had a 2.5L NA engine, and even if you get a NA engine from a '99 or '00, it'll have a 2.4L engine. Motronic 4.4 in the '98 is expecting a 2.5L, and while that little bit of displacement doesn't sound like much, it's enough to throw the ratios off--you'll have driveability issues and possible CELs. I'd suggest getting a B5254FS engine from a '96 or '97 850 or a same-model ('98 S/V70) swap.jablackburn wrote:Oh, hold on a second. I didn't see that the S70 was a GLT; just saw the SE. My fault

Interesting...I did NOT know they ever brought the 2.5 to North America before the later-generation cars.Worse, the '98 SEs had a B5254FS engine, the '99 and '00 SEs have a B5244S (the GLTs have a B5244T). Nonetheless, you should be able to look for a 96-97 (BASE) 850 engine or 98 S/V70 engine/tranny to put into your V70. Switch the sensors, and it'll wire up just fine.

If from a '97 base model 850, no need to switch the sensors. It was a Motronic 4.4 car as well. Early production '96s were Motronic 4.3 and will require a sensor swap, late production '96s were 4.4 and will not.jablackburn wrote:Interesting...I did NOT know they ever brought the 2.5 to North America before the later-generation cars.Worse, the '98 SEs had a B5254FS engine, the '99 and '00 SEs have a B5244S (the GLTs have a B5244T).
