Just test drove a '98 V70 R and a '99 V70 R

Post by matthew1 » Fri Apr 30, 2010 4:26 pm

... and they were both a bit slow and wheezy feeling. Out of tune was my guess. I spoke about the lack of power but the salesman (who did know his Volvos) didn't have any guesses. I would have guessed plugs or wires or distributor ('98) or coils ('99) or injector scum... etc. My '97 T5 is noticeably faster.

This Saffron '98 R and this '99 R, both at Pedersen Volvo in Ft. Collins, Colorado.

The '99 is listed in that ad as a '98, but in person the salesman Zack mentioned it as a '99, and the interior looked like a '99. Didn't look under the hood on that one a) to check for sure it was a '99 by seeing b) if it had an ETM and c) if the ETM had a sticker. The Saffron R looked great under the hood, and under the front of the car.

I'll write more later, w/ closeup pics. If you're thinking you want the rare Saffron R, don't get this one. It has a million small problems, and six past owners. It did not feel like an 82k mile car.

That black one's a 98, the Volvo logo on the front isn't blue

And on 2nd look, there's a 'W' in the 10th digit of the VIN number, that means 98 model year.

So, really, it only has 240 hp in a big heavy AWD wagon, that's why it feels slower than your car. I drove a 2000, with 260 hp, and was still unimpressed, my S70 felt faster. The R takes off a bit faster and digs in, but my car felt like it went more after 20.

I don't suppose you took corners in them with your foot on the floor? Now THATS what the R is all about...digging in and putting that power down whereas our FWD's plow ahead nose-first in a cloud of smoke

Ok, here's some interesting facts.
  • The Saffron V70 is listed as an R model by Pedersen Volvo here and here
  • The badging does not say "R"
  • It has no trip computer, which I found very odd for an R car
I got a weird feeling after looking at it for just a couple minutes. There are a number of strange dents, the strangest being upward dents on the rear doorjamb on the drivers side from the wheel well. Like the rear wheel spun something up hard in the well. Yea.

Does anyone know if 1. a '98 R had trip computer as standard equipment, and 2. regular V70 models came in Saffron color?

Anyway, here are some photos of it.

The Saff is an R. I've never seen one without a trip computer, but of all the things that I could do without,
the trip computer would be near the top of the list. It's relatively in accurate and pretty much pointless.
And Saffron was a special color for R's that I've only seen with '98's. Someone probably peeled the "R".

Other R factors? Front spoiler, rims, door panels, SC-900 with Dolby, motor code in VIN.
And it's hard to tell, but it looks like it has dark blue gauge faces. Looks an R to me.

The "99" also looks like a R, but I've never seen one with out fog lights... :?
The blue gauges show up a lot better though, bit it looks tired.

If fact, Both of these look kinda beat.
If you really want an R, Have you talked to Jim?
He may be kinda spendy, but he does tweak'em. 8)

THe condition of those cars seems decent to me for their age. 82miles is low for a 98 as well.

As for those wierd dents you were talking about, maybe someone shut the door on the seatbelt a few times. My wife's XC has a couple dents form this.

It's got a lot of rust on the underside of it, doesn't it? Rust = PITA for suspension components. Maybe I'm just used to southern cars, 3 years in NJ for mine then the rest of its life in NC, but mine's spent 3 hard winters in VA where they salt the roads at the first HINT of snow, and the underside is still very clean, as was the old Saab that spent part of its life in Pennsylvania.

Plus, for any car that's changed owners 4 times already in that time period, and with low miles on it...it's got to be a lemon. RUN AWAY!

The black one looks like it's in better condition, at least from the photos they have up on their site. If those are anything to judge by. That front bumper's beat all to heck.

Both of my door lights are smashed like that from letting it spend a month with my dad, and the other side from my girlfriend's typical carelessness. :?

Don't worry, I'm not going to buy either car. After 60 seconds behind the wheel it was clear: move on, nothing to see here.

And that was after 20 seconds of just looking them over. Like I mentioned, the Saffron had a clean engine bay and underside (front), but the rest was a disaster. Especially for the price they wanted: $10k. For that much ching, the car should be in excellent condition. This was two full grades below that.

I used JRL cars as my benchmark. He sells these for around $10k, but they're excellent. This wasn't close, not even "in the ballpark" as we say in the States.

The salesman (not Zack) pressed me, like salesmen do, on the Saffron after I drove it and I said the amount I'm thinking would cause embarrassment. "That's ok," they said, "just tell us what you're thinking."

So I said $5k would be a fair price. Of course we were both embarrassed. :D

For those interested, the black car was just as bad, but I didn't spend any time looking at it closely like I did with the Saffron, I only drove it, and it was every bit as wheezy and lethargic. Both had several squeaks and chirps inside.

I don't know how Pedersen is going to get $10k for either car, unless they find a patsy, a rube.

Zack was not really interested in doing much to sell the Saffron. He said he'd gotten calls on it all the way from the East coast. I think they're using it as bait, to be honest.

lol I baught my 01 XC for 10K 3 years ago with 80 miles. Those guys must have smoked their breakfast before putting a price on those cars.

Not saying that they wouldn't be ok cars but not for that price.

Yea, the black one was just as rough -- but had no rare qualities like the Saffron paint. 140k miles, the interior was wrecked -- large, deep scratches on the shifter inlay (the carbon-fiber-looking insert), missing A-pillar triangle plastic insert (on the interior of the car)... they didn't even replace the missing cigarette lighter!

And Justin, the rust... I forgot to add that I agree with you. It was an instant red flag. The red flags just kept popping up, one after another. And it came with snow tires with 1/2 tread left. Another strange facet of this Saffron.

I'm not trying to beat up Pedersen Volvo here -- for the record -- just offering my opinion of the cars I saw that day that were offered for much more than I believe anyone (knowledgeable or even with basic "car sense") would pay.

It's Pedersen's right to fix and price cars as they see fit, and it's my (and your) right to discuss it.

FWIW, they had a 2005 V70 R (and others) for double the price that was five times the car... a much better buy, if you can swing $20k.
