weird problem with odo reading kmh instead of mph

Post by galerie »

I have posted this a few years ago, but I found a mechanic who had that handheld tool to reset. Ok, here is my problem, and it happens every year when the weather gets hot. Instead of the odometer reading miles per hour it reads kilometers per hour. For each mile I drive, the odo states its 1.6, which is putting more miles on the reading. Is there a way to reset back to the US standards of MPH through the diagnosic ports under the hood.

If anyone can help me I would happily paypal them money for a case of beer.

At a rough guess the problem isn't with the electronic pick up the problem is with expansion on the cogs in the head of the speedo, even as the signal is picked up electronically it will be converted into mechanical movement by a set of tiny white plastic cogs fitted into a small case attached to the needle. FCP Sells a repair kit for a few $ might be worth it. Have you discussed the issue with your local Volvo main agent to see if its a known issue. If you're reading it from the Digital display then you can switch back to mph by pressing both top and bottom button at the same time but you need to be quick and accurate.

If it were the cogs, why would resetting through the handheld machine in the diagnositc port reset it back to the US standards. I have talked to him, he doesn't know why it happens but I pretty sure its electric, if I could just find how to do this manually (like when you reset the service) light then all should be good.

I have part of the answer but you may need to experiment to get it right.

The region setting is in DTC 5.

Put the fly wire into A-7 and press the button "firmly" 5 times.

The LED will light up.

From there press the button once and wait for the LED to come on again.

Next press the button twice and once again wait for the LED to come on.

Then press the button 4 times and wait for the LED to come back on.

The book I have does not go into detail but my guess is that you would next enter either one push or two pushes to get the correct mileage rather than kM indications but I don't know which is which - the interior manual simply refers one to the applicable service manual for more detail.

Just a slight correction. it isn't putting any more kilometres on your odometer, as kilometres are kilometres and miles are miles. I once read somewhere how you could change an odometer between these two functions so I'll have a look around the different forums and see if I can come up with this information once again.
There are only two types of car owners - those who own Volvos and those who wish they did.

I understand what you are saying, km/p is still km/p. Say for instance from work to home is 17 miles. when it kilom it reads 26 miles. So in actually, the odo is showing more miles that what it should. (if that makes any sense)

There was a post how you can change by pressing a few buttons on the cluster itself, but that only applied to the cluster that has a lcd readout..mine does not

The A / B diagnostic boxes snap apart - there are release tabs on the bottom of it. Be careful when doing it as the spring under the pushbutton will want to fly away if you just pop it off. It is fairly easy to re-solder the wire.

ok, here we go

First we need to enter Diagnostic Test Mode 5 (data readout)

Key on

Put the fly wire into A7,

Push button five times, briefly but firmly. DTM5 should now be ready for use. When the LED comes on and stays on, the system is ready for entering codes. We need to enter 1-2-4 for speedometer type in this manor:

Enter first digit while LED is still on.
Wait for LED to go out and then come on again before entering second digit
Enter second digit while LED is on.
Wait for LED to go out, then come on again. Now enter third digit.
Read off and note down the response code. It will most likely be 1-1-1 or 1-1-2 if your in KM's

Now we need to enter DTM6 (data entry) and we only have 30 seconds from the end of the DTM5 readout to start.

Press button 6 times within 30 seconds to access DTM 6 .
Now enter the new code 1-1-4 for US market in the same manor as you entered the prevoius code.

The LED will now repeat the codes you entered to let you check that you got them right.

When the LED comes on and stays on, confirm the entry by pressing the button and holding it down for more than 5 seconds .
Release button. LED will go out, and your done atlast.

just so you know, timing is critical, so if you get lost, just Key Off and start over.

Thank you I will try this tonight after work, I did manage to get the wire back in, and the lights lite so i guess it was getting a connection.

It worked!!! The instructions from 850tech above worked perfectly. My car is now reading mph. Thank you so much 850tech and everyone else that contributed to this post.
