A/C and blower fan not working

Post by ckvolvo » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:41 am

I have a 1995 850 turbo wagon. I had the climate control unit and the blower fan replaced in April of 2010. The problem I was having when I turned on the fan for air or a/c, the little lights above the a/c switch and above the rec switch would start blinking on and of. I took to the Volvo dealer and they told me that the blower and climate control were bad and needed to be replaced.
Every worked fine up until last week. Now the same problem is happening again. The fan stopped running and the a/c doesn't run and the blinking lights are back. Does anybody have any idea what might be the problem?

I can think of two possible issues. One; the resistor needs to be replaced and should be an easy fix. Second; I had to replace the engine coolant temp sensor as that was causing the climate control not to work. I know it sounds weird but both my indy shop and IPD said this. That is also an easy and cheap fix.

Hi, I seem to have the same problem, ish! I have just bought a 1994 850 T5 from my step dad, and the blower inside the car will work fine for ages, then all of a sudden, just turn off and not work again until you turn the ignition off and back on again, also the A/C doesn't seem to engage, I have regassed it myself so I know the right amount of fluid/gas is in there and should work fine! Just never hear the compressor kick in! Are these problems linked?

This is an english model by the way, so I don't know if there is any difference in other models such as the 855!

Any help with this would be great! Cheers!

The fact that you can make it work again by turning the car on and off points to a bad electrical portion of the ignition switch. This is a very common failure and it is relatively cheap and very easy to change.

Actually, you saying that about the ignition switch, the abs and tracs lights come on sometimes for a while, and also after starting the vehicle you have to bring the key back a touch so that it engages the lights etc, otherwise the car will run and you will have no electrics. So the the ign switch could be the root of all of those problems then???? I knew it was nakered but I didn't think it would affect the A/C and Blower. Worth a try, it's got to be done anyway!

Cheers!

Lights blinking indicate a fault that the climate control system is able to determine. In my mind, this sounds electrical. Have you had luck checking the fuses? I doubt it is the resistor card before the blower; when they fail, they fail such that you still have high blower to meet federal defrost regulations.

Without knowing what the codes are (there's a thread here on counting the blinking lights...) I would head back to the dealer, have them read the codes, and see if the work they did might overlap with this trouble. There should be a warranty period on their work if there is overlap. For example, if you now have a bad blower and that is the reason for the failure, what is the warranty on the replacement they sold you in April? Sorry I cannot be more help than that.

Very Best Regards,

HVAC Dude
