Transmission Fluid and change

Post by Colonialgirl » Sun Nov 21, 2010 3:17 am

Okay, I did the search and read the various postings there about flushing and changing the Transmission fluid in my '98 S-70. It's got about 120K on it and as far as I know has never had the tranny fluid changed. The flush procedure sounds pretty easy even for this old Lady, but I am curios as to what Tranny Fluid to use. I switched the engine over to the Synthetic stuff when I bought the car with 74K on it, and I'd like to do the same with the transmission. So is the Mobil 1 Synthetic okay for it, or how about any other synthetic Tranny fluid and/or how about the new Dexron IV stuff?.

In other words, any Dexron 3 or equivilent.
Remember at your miles you do not want to power flush.
You can use the Gibbons method, otherwise just do three drain and fills within 2-300 miles of each other

The drain and fill method makes sense, yet my unanswered question lingers...
Are all these fluids compatible, or what happens if you start adding an incompatible fluid?
I guess if you can be absolutely certain that the fluid was never swapped out for something else, then going ahead with Dextron III is ok. But what if someone did change it to some new-fangled fluid?

That is what is stopping me from messing with it. Possible incompatibility of fluids damaging the tranny.

They are all backwards compatible...Dex IV I believe is the newest...even Mobile Synthetic ATF is okay... Just try to get as much of the old out as possible over a period of a few hundred miles (as JRL suggested) and you should be fine.
