V70 shakes at highway speeds.

Post by tylermurgo » Sun Nov 21, 2010 8:15 pm

So I recently purchased a 1999 V70, and when on the highway at speeds around 70 MPH the car begins to shake and rumble. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I plan on taking it to the mechanic soon, but I'm curious if anyone else has had an experience like this.
Thanks for your time and help!

Unbalanced wheels?

Does the steering wheel pull back and forth? If it does, then you're in need of new tie rods as well.

Does it do it on acceleration or up hills too, or just at highway speeds?

I am thinking maybe motor mounts?

usually if your wheels arent balance they will start vibrating once you past 50 to about 60 and will disappear usually about 80.

If it does it more when you apply brakes it could be your rotors. You should have it looked at regardless.

Mine 1999 V70XC had been checked for the wheel balance and shakes like hell: steering wheel and visibly passenger seat. One of the tie-rods is stock, the other one is recently changed by previous owner. I was suspecting that but kinda like to double check if that may solve issue. Also struts aren't lookin' tight.

Bent rims may not be able to balance out. I did it to mine...shakes around 75-80 and 25-30.
